Are we able to book online reservations or do we have to do it through member services?
 
Only through member services. If you do a search of this you will find multiple thread about it.
 
You can submit an e-mail request for reservations from the member website.
 
You can e-mail your request to Member Services but it can take 2 or 3 days to confirm.
 

You can do it online. Just go to the member website, sign in. Under "Plan My Vacation" on the right you will see "Request a Reservation"

We sent in our 11 month request this way and were able to book with no problem. However, when we got to the 7 month mark and wanted to try to change it we called.

There's an automated way to create an email request on the member web site, but I wouldn't really call it online booking. Unlike the online booking system used for CRO stays, there's no way to check availability or get an immediate confirmation when requesting a booking via the DVC Member web site. The tool there is just an automated way to create an email to member services.
 
It would be nice to do it yourself online with really availability checking as with CRO.

Does anyone know if there are any plans to introduce such a capability? Any idea why they don't already?

They have been promising this for YEARS!!! Hasn't happened yet, so don't hold your breath!

Agreed and that is why I specified that when we wanted to changed at the 7 month mark we called. The 11 month mark was at SSR and we weren't concerned about availabilty.
