I'm thinking of using one of those online services which will back up your computer. Someone recommended Mozy. Interested to hear what others are using.

I do not use an online service (my Mac, external hard drives, and techie DH do it for me) but I've heard good things about Carbonite.

I use kineticD - it used to be data deposit box. It is geared more to a small business and has remote access. It works in the background and I have never had a problem. Saved me more than once!

I used to use Mozy until I neeed it to move files to my new computer. Disaster. Took literally days and then none of the files were where I needed them to go. Customer service was NO HELP. I'm moving to an external hard drive.

I don't think I'd ever use an on-line service. I don't want all my stuff in someone else's hands.

Its just as easy to get an external hard drive and use that, keeping all your data in your OWN hands.

I use Mozy and have had to restore from it TWICE (to new computers). Worked perfectly both times. My experience couldn't have been better.

I use Carbonite at work, and it works well backing up. I've never had to restore from it though. We used to use an external hard drive at work, and 1, we never remembered to use it, and 2, we never remembered to take it home, so if there had been a fire or something at the site the data would have been gone.

We use Crash Plan for backing up all of our computers. First off, the ad-supported version of the software is free and lets to back up to an external hard drive or another computer running Crash Plan. You can add online backup for an additional cost that is comparable to Mozy and Carbonite. What really sold me on Crash Plan was that they have a $100 (yearly cost) plan that lets you back up all of your PC's. They support Windows, Mac, and Linux (common on many older netbooks). Crash Plan Central (the online backup) also sends e-mail notifications to let you know how much you're backing up and if something isn't backing up.

We use Carbonite. It's about $55 a year. You can access the information from any computer with internet access. It automatically backs up our computers at specific intervals (don't know what they are since DH set it up), but it's at least every week.

When I used Carbonite about a year ago, it did not back up video files by default. Here's the article on their web site: http://carbonite.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1381 . So, if you're taking video with your digital camera or you have something like a Flip, be aware that those files are not necessarily being backed up unless you specifically go in and tell it to back up those files. Also be aware that it will not back up video files that are larger than 4GB.

Buy an external hard drive and back up your files that way.
