One Year to Save 2013-2014 Edition

Sept. 2014 for DH and I
WDW 30th Wedding Anniversary trip.

Want to stay at:
POR-Standard Room for 8 nights: $1600.00
7 day park tixs w/hoppers: $783.84
Airfare: $600.00
Hoping for FD:goodvibes
Total: $2,983.84
trying to save $250.00 per month

I hope we all meet our goals and have a Magical trip!:thumbsup2

Hi! Dreaming of a Dec 2014 trip. I worked out the budget below (I like to overestimate when I budget) for my family of 2 adults & 2 kids.

Driving (priced out gas using the AAA trip calculator & tolls) = $500
Resort for 7 nights (considering different options, POR, POFQ, or renting pts for a studio at VWL or AKL) = $1500
6 day park tickets = $1400
MVMCP tickets = $400
Food/souvenirs/tips =$2000
Additional budget padding = $200

I need to start putting away $400 each month to meet that budget. I'm hoping the trip will cost well less than that budget but I'd rather be on the safe side. I'm looking forward to reading ideas & motivation from others about making this work :)

We have been going back & forth between Oct '14 or Dec. '14. Right now we are thinking Dec because I've always wanted to see DisneyWorld decorated for Christmas!

Family of 5 (2 real adults, 1 Dis-adult, 2 children)
9 nights/10days

Flights/parking/gas $2500
Resort (POR) $2200
7-day tickets $1610
Dining Plan $1925
Tips/Spending $750
$8985 At the most!

We're hoping for a room discount or FD, otherwise we are going to try putting $ on GC to use for the meals to see if we'll do better without dining plan.

The biggest expense is getting there & DH won't even consider driving so we stay for as long as we can! :)

There are places we can cut a few $ but this is the high estimate.

We have about $600 saved so far and I recently went back to work so that should help.

DS used to have a paper route (1x per week) but he decided after this long winter that he hated it. So we took it over as a family and we all help with it and that money goes into the Disney Jar along with "found money" and change....

I just set up a savings account and auto transfer for $ to go into it each month.

If we get a tax return, it'll go into the vacation fund along with DH Christmas bonus.

So, let the saving begin!!

I LOVE this!!! It's great to find people who think like I do, so I don't have to bug DH with my trip planning schemes.

I skipped the ddp this year....we have gotten it free and/or paid for it in the past. We dined how/when we wanted, ordered whatever we wanted, snacked as much as we wanted. I kept track of everything, b/c for DH it is a mental thing about seeing the dollar amount on that bill...makes him sick. He would rather use a ddp, even if he paid more for it than the dollar amount. I wanted to prove to him that we wouldn't spend the amt on food as we would the ddp. Ended up I was right. We spent much less. So don't worry about doing the gift card thing...it will be just fine!
Here is the link to my experiment:

I just found out I'm getting $200 back that I gave to a friend to help him out in a time of need. I didn't call it a loan as I figured it would be a long time before he would be able to pay it back so I said it was a gift. But I guess he can return it and and is insisting on returning it to me. Should get it next week sometime.

As it came out of my Disney fund...it's going right back in! :cheer2:

I've also had some good survey mojo lately so I'm trying to build my rewards dollars up as quickly as possible. :woohoo:

Sooooo.... this thread actually changed our travel plans! I've never sat down and figured out all of the little expenses, and it was an eye-opener. We are going to Scotland next summer, which will come out of the vacation savings account, but I wanted to squeeze in our first (and probably only) trip to Disneyland during the kids' mardi gras break the first week in March. Everyone thought I was crazy to do both. I have hoarded RR points and disney dollars for years, so in my mind this trip was almost going to be free... until I sat down to make the budget for this thread :thumbsup2 Our original plans were 4 days in San Diego and then 4 in DL, but I realized that SD was adding somewhere between $1500-$2000 to the trip, and we weren't even going to have time to do everything we wanted! So, we decided to fly into LAX instead, which saved almost $700 in airfare, not to mention the additional hotel nights, entrance fees, rental car, etc. We are going to do 1 1/2 days in Los Angeles and 3 days in DL instead which will be so much cheaper. So, here is the new and much more responsible budget trip:

Flights: Will have appx $400 in out of pocket after using RR. May look into transferring some chase ultimate rewards to SW instead of paying oop though.
Rental car: no clue yet, have to research how to find a deal but am hopefully overestimating at $300
Entrance fees/Parking fees in LA: $150
DL tickets: $1268
2 hotel nights in LA: $300 (estimate, not sure where we're staying yet)
Gas for rental car: $100
Food/souvenirs: $1000. We should be able to do this for less, will be having counter service, maybe one sit down, and we usually share meals. We usually do not buy many souvenirs.
Airport Parking: $40
Staying at Grand Californian on DVC points, am not going to include dvc dues ($420/yr) in this as they're already paid.
$3,558 total

Total have so far:
$498 in Disney reward dollars
$520 in cash back on Citi Card
$1300 in cash that I have been hoarding for years (anytime I have small bills or people pay me back for things I bought them, etc. I stash it away)

Plan to make the rest ($1,240):
-I have several jars of change that I've saved, will finally cash it in.
-Will start selling a few things... I always say I'm going to do this and then after looking at it collect dust I donate them, but will definitely try to do this now!
-Will resume budgeting in YNAB (I haven't done it in almost a year) and will transfer any "savings" from household categories into this fund.
-hopefully Target will have their gift card deals around Christmas again and I can knock 20% off the disney expenses again!

Looking forward to hearing how everyone else will be saving/finding money! I would love to earn a gift card or two on some reward sites, but I've never had any luck with surveys and things like that... if anyone has a tried and true site that doesn't require an insane amount of time, would love to hear it!

Vacation account balance: $2640
Quickrewards: $26.80
Paypal: $27.35
Change Jar: $18

Total: $2712.15

**$200 loan repayment not yet received so not included in this total

10 months and more than $7000 to go.

C'mon big money....
:lmao:

Status Update:

4360 - grand total
25 - Shell gas card from MyPoints (Done)
25 - Shell gas card from Husband's MyPoints account (51 points away!)
200 - PayPal payouts from my Swagbucks
200 - PayPal payouts from Husband's Swagbucks account
2500 - DH paychecks and income tax
69.86 - in my Disney Fund!

This leaves only 1340.14 to go and a year to get there!

Status update:

$560 from our jar money
$1000 from my mom (anniversary gift)

Only about $3500 to go and one year & 1 week (approx) until we go. Come on BIG money!

Airfare: 20K+ SWA RR points currently available (approx. $330 in Wanna Get Away fares).
Goal is to have enough points for 2 RT tickets by spring of 2014 when fall fares become available.
Needed: approx. 20K more points. Continue to accrue points using eRewards, e-Miles and SWA CC.
I just got SWA to extend some ticketless travel funds for 6 months. They took $100 off per ticket but those are the breaks! I had actually been given $100 in a LUV voucher last year when they messed up on a promo and charged customers 2 and 3 times for their tickets. So really, they only took back what they'd given me in the first place. The funds had expired and I would have lost the entire amount otherwise.

The upside is that the airfare for my flight this fall went down today. I re-booked using the ticketless travel funds and canceled the previous reservation. The RR points that had been used to book those seats were returned to my account and I now have an extra 20K+ to use for a future trip. Plus, the $10 in 9/11 fees were refunded to my credit card. It looks like next year's airfare is already covered!

ETA: Because I'm now "paying" for the flights this fall instead of using points, I will also earn RR points for myself and my husband. That will amount to around 1500 more points between the two accounts.

I've always been blessed to pay for vacations/trips prior to going on them. Oooh...I couldn't have fun with the bills hanging over my head the whole time! Well, here goes, just to join the fun for our 1/14 trip

2 hotel rooms for 7 days: $1,308 (ASMu with AAA discount - booked)
2 four-day WDW passes: $533
2 USIOA tickets: $176
Food: $610 (B in rooms, 8 L, 3 TS dinners & 4 CS dinners, + snacks)
Car service or shuttle to USIOA: $50 (?)
Airfare: $20 for the fees. (Airfare acquired w. SW points!!!)
Total: $2,697

I've just been saving up a little every month...made easier because the trip was postponed from 2012 so I've had more time. Also have 254 Dis reward dollars, used AAA discount and will be bringing some snacks. I budgeted $535 in spending money for an 8-day trip (that counts 2 travel days) + another $150 or so for gifts. SW credit card was the big help here and I occasionally fly for work so it's faster to earn points. I'm on track to have the whole thing saved prior to leaving...just chucking $45 a month towards it...chipping away so small it is nearly painless.

Disney Breakdown!

We are headed to Disney in December of 2014 so I've got just over a year to book it and pay it off!

Our Tickets, Dining Plan, Hotel, and Transportation is about 4000.00
We haven't priced airline tickets becuase we aren't sure if we want to fly or if we want to drive. (we are leaning more towards flying)

We are giong ot book it the beginning of September and put down the deposit of $200.00. Then we are going to put $100 towards it each payday. In February of 2014, the DH gets his re-enlistment bonus so we will get it paid off then!

Can you explain this for me?? What 20% off gift card deal did Target have last year?

This is such a good idea! I haven't really super crunched the numbers beyond the basics, lodging, tickets and airfare for 2 adults, 2 kids and one 2 y/o.
We are going in Oct. 2014, but I know my parents will be crushed if we don't visit them first, so I'm actually planning for two trips, one to Canada in Feb. before my youngest turns 2 and the Disney trip in the fall. (we live in Guatemala)

Disney
Airfare - $1,500
Hotel/Tickets - $4895
Dining - not sure yet, plan to order some stuff on Amazon and some from WeGoShopping, so maybe $1,000
Visa for DH (he's Guatemalan) - $100
Other - $500
Total: Approx. $8,000

With the Canada trip, I need to put away about $1,000 a month to make this happen. Ack! I'm writing some books to publish on Kindle, which will hopefully boost my passive money. All my Kindle earnings go into a Canadian bank account that I don't have easy access to, so that's easy to save.

Dining should be paid for by a blogging site I work for. It's $100 a month, so should pay for food and maybe some souvenirs.
We also have a change jar which DH doesn't know about (he'd dig into it for tortillas), but my kids are grabbing any coins they find and any money from the laundry goes into it, as well.
I have some other assorted sites online like Redgage and others which have money in the accounts, so I'm leaving it there until closer to the trip, when I'll transfer it all and use it for hotel costs.

I'm picking up as much freelance work as possible to make that extra grand a month and trying to cut costs, as well.

This is cool! I'm in! Our trip is not until Sept 2014. I have a Plan A (with Free Dining) and a Plan B (if Free Dining is not offered)
We are a family of 5 for this trip: DH, myself, DS22, DS17, and DD14

Plan A (w/ Free Dining) looks like this so far:

Airfare: We have never flown as a family before so this is new to me. I started a thread and got some really good advice. A special shout out to "spears2008" for this tip:
"I would recommend the Chase sapphire preferred card which gives you 40,000 bonus points if you spend 3,000 in the first 3 months AND the chase southwest card (apply when they offer 50,000 points for spending 2,000 in the first 3 months). Chase sapphire can be transferred to Southwest, so that would give you 95,000 miles for spending $5,000 on the cards. If you redeem for SW wanna get away tickets, that is worth $1,583 of airfare! (That's 60 points used for each dollar of airfare). "
Applying for the Sapphire card today to get that rolling. Was told Chase SW card ran the 50K points promo last year in Jan, so going to watch and hopefully apply with that promo then.
So, That gives me a budget of about $300 per round trip ticket. Based on recent research I feeling like I can get them for that if I keep a close watch on fares. Best case scenario--- (drum roll) ........ Airfare will be , or very nearly covered with the bonus points!!!!
DS25 will be dropping us off an picking up from airport so no parking expense. Using Disney's Magical Express in Orlando

Room: Since we are the dreaded "party of 5" our choices are limited. Our plan as of right now is that the free dining will include POR and we can get a room in Alligator Bayou with the fold down bed. (I know the bed is small but DD is a tiny thing (even tho she eats like a horse) and we've measured the mattress size out and she says she'll be fine. Hey, after a full day in the park, one can sleep on a razor blade, no?) I'm excited bc last yr we stayed at POFQ and liked it but ready for a change in theme and we are the out-doorsey type so the lush grounds will suit us!
Tickets: 5 "Disney adult", 6 day base tix (Found 5 of our "Park Hopper Plus" tix from 2003 with a remaining Water Park option. Based on research on allears.net the waterpark option on these tix does not expire. So going to give it a shot using them for a WP day if weather permits.)

Room and Tickets combined $3516. (according to Disney website just this morning) Adult son paying 1/5 of that so grand total on my tab is
~$2813
Saved: Currently have close to $800 in rewards dollars accumulated between my 2 Discover cards and the Chase Freedom (thanks to the working the quarterly 5% promos and 1 $250 bonus from Discover when I spent $3k over a 3 month period) We put everything we can on these cards including utility bills so I am pretty confidant that will be up well over $1k by next year at this time. Plus I will do market research focus groups (usually 2-3 per year) at an average of $100 each. That money goes right in the WDW fund so I'm guessing I'll have at the very least $1500 saved! Remaining $1100 or so I will keep on the Disney Visa (which hopefully will give the usual 6 mo no interest offer) and pay it off over the 6 months. That's what we did for the 2012 trip.

Food: FREE Standard Dining Plan! woo hoo
Tax and Tips on food to be covered by our change saving jar which usually ends up being $200-300.

Other Tips: Question here.. Do you tip Magical Express bus driver?
Change jar savings usually is enough to cover maid service (room) tips as well.

Souvenirs:
Budgeting about $300. ($100 each for the younger 2 kids and $100 for DH and I. Adult DS obviously has his own $)
Will be paid using my rewards dollars from the Disney Visa (which I will use to pay for the room and tix.) Then I usually calculate how much more I need to spend on that card to reach my rewards goal and throw some more purchases on that as needed.
So, souvenirs should be covered by the Disney Gift Cards from Disney Visa!

"Plan B" is if Free Dining is NOT offered :sad1: and that changes the room cost and obviously the food. This is not the optimum scenario but if this is the case we will allot for food expense by decreasing the room cost. This will mean staying offsite (Suite hotel, Condo or rental villa) for a target price of $79-89 per nite. (have obtained this price in the past) There will be then be the added costs of a rental car, parking fees and food will be out of pocket......... ugh! I don't even want to think about planning this type of trip but will do it if necessary. Any added advice in this regard would be appreciated. Here goes. This is very preliminary!.........
Room/condo/villa= $700
Rental Car= $300
Parking =$100
Food= $800* (not incl tax and tips which is allotted for in a separate category see Plan A)
--------------------------
Total: $1900 (which is the same as the room cost for 8 nites at POR- so that would keep us at the same budget level as with Plan A)
Tix: 1600 (saving a little getting them from UT)
Grand total = $3500 with adult DS paying 1/5 = $2800 on our tab,

*I know the food cost sounds low but we will eat breakfast in the room/condo/villa, pack snacks to nibble on during the day and have our main meal at lunchtime rather than dinner. Have done this on previous trips.

so roughly the same as with free dining except for we will really have to plan a food budget per day and stick to it, which takes some of the fun out of the trip but is "doable". We've done it before on trips w/o free dining.

I'm heading to Hawaii next August as well. I have enough in savings to cover it now but I know I will not have enough left over to make me feel comfortable. The trip will be to celebrate my graduation and I have been saving for a while for a big trip, but I just decided on Hawaii for sure recently. I am hoping for two weeks, 6 nights on the Big Island and 8 on Oahu at Aulani.

Adding my details now that I have more time.

Flight to Hawaii-$783-$200 credit card cash back. =$583 Much less then I was thinking!
Inter-island airfare- American Airline miles. :cool1: $5 fee
Hotel on Big Island-5 or 6 nights, hoping to get a condo from VRBO for about $100 a night. I need to do more research.
Aulani-DVC points :cool1: Plus about $40 in Hawaii taxes
Rental car-I've only looked on Priceline so far but it looks like about $400 for the two weeks. I gotta keep my eye out for deals because that is way too much plus gas.
Activities and food-Still working on this part. I am hoping for the entire come in under $3500 total. Which only leaves a little more than $100 a day for this stuff. I have a few expensive activities I really want to do so I need to prioritize.

Well after looking at my schools calender, August wont work. So I am going in May! I just bought tickets and think I got a good price.

This is our first trip to Disney ever! :thumbsup2 It will also be my husbands first time to fly.:flower3: We are going in October, 2014.

This is what we have decided budget wise. Since there are only two of us and this is our anniversary trip (27 years) we can cut a lot of costs if we improvise a bit.

Room/Tickets: $1350 We will likely be staying at All Star or another Value. Total estimate cost with 4 days tickets to WDW (Not getting Parkhoppers, just the base ticket) around $1350 according to quote on DW site.

Flights I have estimated about $600 just in case for two flights on Southwest Airlines. Since I have only flown once in my life as a teenager we have no miles saved up to use. The plan is to pay for the biggest part of my airfare if not all of it, using Swagbucks. I am retired and it is just my husband and I and we have no outside responsibilities so I am able to spend quite a bit of time per day working on Swagbucks, that is how I am able to make anywhere from 100-150 SB per day. :cheer2::cheer2: I am saving those up to get SW Gift Cards with. Since I am only allowed to use 4 per transaction I get the $100 ones.

Food-$100 That seems like a minute amount but I am bringing a lot of stuff with us and going to get Milk and other things like that to keep in the refrigerator once we are there. We may eat out a couple times if we can swing it. To pay for those meals I am using My Points to get a Landry's Gift Card.

Spending Money: $1500 To do this we are buying one $100 Disney Gift Card per month. The reason we are taking this much is because we plan on doing a little Christmas Shopping while we are there. So, this is our Christmas Budget for next year.:thumbsup2

Other Transportation:$200 In lieu of leaving a car at the airport we have decided to take the Greyhound into Memphis and catch our flights there. Total Greyhound Ticket is right at $96 round trip. We have allowed the extra $100 for taxi fares..etc. to and from the airport in Memphis.

Tips:?? This is our grey area, we come a from a small southern town and are not certain how this tipping business works.:rolleyes1 So its going to take some time for us to estimate about how many tips we need for each of the services and come up with a savings plan for those.;)

I think I have covered everything here that we have planned thus far. If not I will update it soon. Excited about my trip and looking forward to reading others plans as well.:thumbsup2
