One year living in our timeshares: 2 1/2 year update

Thanks for updating, I was following your other thread hoping for an update and saw you started a new thread. So happy for you everything is going well, I envy your lifestyle and hope one day I can do something similar. I second the blog/book route, I think a lot of people would be interested to read your story.

The best thing we did looking back was to invest in skills that we could offer an employer. One of my in-laws says we just got lucky (the one that has been on welfare for 5 years, no education, no job skills), but we made our own luck through education and hard work.

My favorite quote, Thomas Jefferson, "I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it." So very true.

Thank you for sharing part of your retirement with us. Please keep updating so we can live through your experiences! I would love to do the same when we retire. We are plan on it at 55 as well.

Thank you for your service and keeping us safe.

If you want a timeshare at Sandestin, I would recommend Club Intrawest over Wyndham.

We are at CI for 5 weeks and Wyndham for one.

CI is much nicer. Wyndham is the only timeshare I am sorry I purchased. IMO it is the Motel 6 of timeshares.

BUT - Wyndham is dirt cheap on the resale market. You have to watch because they have quite a few properties that are junk. It seems like they purchase run down hotels and timeshares and then try to remodel them. The properties that Wyndham builds from the ground up are decent.

They always are very, very pushy about trying to get you to buy more.

Well tell us how you really feel :rotfl: Reading that made me laugh out loud. It's very descriptive.

Wow - what you have done is amazing! I would love to be able to do this for my retirement. I better get cracking and scoop up some more timeshares - I only have 400 SSR points :)

Me = Jealous :)

10.26.2013 11.02.2013 Beach Club Villas 1 bedroom
12.29.2013 1.05.2014 Saratoga Springs 2 bedroom w/kids
2.24.2013 3.6.2013 St Thomas day trip St Johns studio plus:)

Looks like we will cross paths three times in the coming year.

We will be at -
Villas Grand Floridian 10/23-10/27
Saratoga Springs 12/25-1/5
Celebrity Cruise 2/23-3/1 with a stop at St Thomas

If you are up for it, I like to buy you a drink.....talk some timeshares or Disney or the weather. Realistically, the trip over NYE would be best.

When the time comes drop me a message - I always love to talk timeshares!

That way you can confirm that I really do exist

Ohiodvc. I'd be interested in hearing about your vero beach stay.

We're thinking of buying there or hhi.

First, thank you for your service to our country! Second, thank you for sharing about this--absolutely fascinating! I hope you're having a great day!

Hi there,

Can you elaborate on Wyndham? I see you're staying in Waikiki and San Diego in Wyndham properties. Are those nice properties? Thanks!

In my travels I have found that Wyndham deliveries lower quality accommodations and service compared to the timeshares I have experienced over the last 20 years and more recently over the last year.

Where I've gone with Wyndham:

Bonnet Creek WDW FL 5 stays
Santa Barbara - Pompano Beach FL
Emerald Grande at Destin - FL
Riversides San Antonio TX
La Cascada San Antonio TX
Kona Hawaiian Resort - Big Island Hawaii
Kauai Beach Resort = Kauai Hawaii
Royal Gardens at Waikiki - Honolulu Hawaii
Wyndham Nashville - TN

I have also toured the following: Royal Sea Cliffs HI, Bali Hai Villas HI, Waikiki Beach Walk HI, Royal Vista FL, Sea Gardens FL and Palm-Aire FL.

Here are my observations.

Understaffed compared to other timeshares I've been too

Extremely aggressive timeshare push, refuse to take "NO" to attend owner's update

Takes 20 minutes to get Bonnet Springs front desk to answer phone

Low number of front desk staff at Bonnet Creek compared to number of units

Bonnet Creek front desk TWICE programed room keys to end at midnight the night BEFORE check out. My niece and husband stayed with us and where at the hot tub past midnight. They could not get back in the building. Went to the front desk and they provided our names, their names, names of their children(all registered guests)but could not remember my street address. They were told to leave the property or they would be arrested. The front desk refused to call us or let them use a phone to call us. (they had no ID since they were in the hot tub). Finally MX person let them in. They will never go back to Bonnet Creek.

Stayed at Bonnet Creek for 2 1/2 weeks and got NO HOUSEKEEPING except for changing out towels once. I made 5 complaints and got nowhere.

At Kauai they only had air conditioning in the bedrooms, no problem - trade winds right? The windows were screwed shut because they were so rusty they would not work. The sliding grass door came off its tracks because the tracks were totally rusted out. The unit was totally DISGUSTING. The rug was extremely strained and the unit needed remodeling 3-4 years before. The beach was beautiful!!!!

At Nashville the Concierge refused to give us our parking permit until I scheduled a member's review. Things got ugly and she ended up throwing the parking permit in my face and stormed off.

I resent the strong arm tactics at check-in to get you to go to another timeshare presentation.

Wyndham will nickle and dime you to death with charges. If you make too many reservations, they start charging you. If you make a guest reservation, they charge you. If you cancel a reservation, points go into cancel points status with limitations, even if you cancel 1 year out. No ability to bank points unless you put them into RCI. Limited ability to borrow.

At most resorts, they restricted reservations in 3, 4, or 7 day increments. Must check-in on Friday, Saturday or Sunday if staying 7 days

IMO - Wyndham buys distressed properties. Example - Emerald Grande was built to sell as individual condos but the market crashed. Wyndham bought 64 units (as of last June) and rents them out.) Another company actually runs the complex and they do it on the cheap. When we were there 90% of the workers were college students doing an internship - and they were lost!

Santa Barbara was an old hotel that they remodeled into timeshares - awkward! Next door was an empty field where an old resort was torn down - an eyesore.

At Kauai they only own about half the resort. Waikiki Royal Gardens had about 6 floors as permanent owners. The resort had the smallest pool I have even seen for a hotel or timeshare.

About 40% of the Wyndham properties I have stayed at are what I consider substandard for major timeshare companies.

I spoke once with an assistant manger at Bonnet Creek and their statement summed up Wyndham's attitude towards its members...we were discussing the difference between DVC and Wyndham, and I quote exactly..."DVC is an entertainment/lodging company, Wyndham is a sales company"

Better then most, DVC to some degree, treats you like a member, Wyndham treats you like a "mark" to try and hustle to buy more timeshare.

Here is an analogy to make my point:

Wyndham is like buying a car from a sleazy used car salesmen.

DVC is like buying a new BMW or Mercedes.

Your other questions...

The Wyndham Royal Gardens in Waikiki was a very small hotel room with a mini, partial kitchen. Nothing special, very small pool, valet parking only at $35 per night. OK views of the canal where they practice with the outrigger canoes. No view of the ocean. 2-3 block walk to Waikiki beach and very convenient to downtown.

We haven't stayed at the Wyndham in San Diego yet but have reservations for January and February to stop there on our way to and from Hawaii

Congrats on being able to live out your retirement dream. We love the VGC and Aulani too and hopefully we can spend quite a bit of time there once we retire (darn we still have several years to go).

My favorite resort - just the resort itself
Grand California Resort and Spa - I just love the place
Aulani is a very close second

Awesome 48 weeks.... I'm hoping to spend 3 months in Hawaii when we retire. With banking and borrowing at both DVC and Marriott it might be possible...

I think our retirement will be more like yours, we'd like to spend a few months on the islands each year, but I'm not sure I want to give up my home base.

Thank you OhioDVC for your remarks on Wyndham! I've been thinking of possibly another timeshare and Wyndham came to mind. My friend owns at Bonnet Creek and brags about it and has traded out and liked those resorts. Of course if you have nothing else to compare to its probably the best, which I don't think she has stayed at the best! I just got back from Aulani, wonderful stay and high customer service. I spoke to an employee there that has been there since the beginning helped open the place and said it's not easy getting a job there. Disney looks for quality people and she went through 4 interviews! Disney wants to hire the best!

OhioDVC--thanks for your recap of Wyndham!

We actually just got our Wyndham membership for a VERY small resale purchase. I will take your advice to heart about what to watch out for.

We're also going to stay at only a select few Wyndhams and it's mainly to support our non-Disney vacations (like to SF, SD and Hawaii). Should be interesting. With 2 kids, some hotels do not allow a 4 person occupancy in one room; and so it's nice to have a "cheap" 1 bedroom as an alternative. I guess we'll see whether Wyndham works out for us. Since I got this resale for literally next to nothing, I won't be *too* upset if I dislike the properties. My points will just go into RCI for trades. I don't have enough points for it to matter too much anyway.

I do have one question (probably more for your wife)---- we just finished a 19 day trip overseas and we changed hotels about every 4 days or so. By the 2nd time I did that, I was almost in tears in having to pack & repack for the 4 of us. With the jetlag, it was just exhausting. Does that bother you guys, or do you have a "system" down on how to move from place to place without being overwhelmed negatively by it?

Hope you update this thread again soon with your new adventures!

Love this, and glad to know that someone who served our country is living the dream!

I totally agree with you! If you get Wyndham at the right (low) prices it is a good deal. You just need to adjust your attitude - it's not DVC.

I suggest:

Plan ahead very well and try to limit the number of times you make or change reservations

Be very selected of the properties you go to

Ignore the Concierge - they are really timeshare sales staff

Don't get your "Parking Permit" Wyndham won't do anything if you car doesn't have one and it is just another attempt to sign you up for a timeshare presentation

Politely demand the services that the POS states that you get and don't take "no" for an answer.

Don't hesitate to talk with the head of housekeeping concerning missed or inadequate housekeeping services

Don't expect DVC and you'll be fine

If you are cornered by the timeshare staff simply tell them that "I only buy timeshares off of the resale market" and watch as they turn red, then purple and then they ignore you! Have fun on your vacations!

Packing....

When we pack for travel by plane it is a little harder then when we drive. With our pickup truck we have a very large amount of space for just about everything we need.

Once you get a pattern on what goes where when packing things get easier. Split up the work, sounds like you do all the packing. Maybe your husband could pack his bag and one child, you do yours and the other child. We share the packing about 60/40 with my wife doing a little more. I compensate by doing more of other tasks.

Pack lighter. I can't tell you how many times on vacations I brought back clothes I never wore. Most timeshares have a washer/dryer in the room, maybe wash clothes one evening in the middle of vacation and take half of the clothes.

Remind yourself while you are packing that you won't need to clean toilets, my least favorite job. It is all a matter of perspective.

Thanks for the response :thumbsup2

As to packing, we've discussed it and decided that my husband is going to start (trying) to do at least his own suitcase. Me and the girls will share our own so that I don't have to do everyone's. I've been packing his for the last 11 years that I've known him (countless trips) and this started when we went to Mexico one year and he completely forgot all of his underwear :rotfl: The only place in town was a supermarket that sold boxers on hangers. He wasn't too thrilled about wearing unwashed Mexican underwear. We'll see how the next trip goes.

As to Wyndham, there were some issues with the account when I took it over and I got a partial refund. My bottomline ended being the $299 transfer fee plus $50 for a small EOY contract at a (currently) low MF resort. I had buyer's remorse during the transfer process, but I've looked into the RCI system and even with trading it's a very good deal.
It's also nice to know what to expect, so thank you for your comments. :thumbsup2

Would you mind posting back after your Wyndham Harbour Lights (SD) and Wyndham Waikiki Beach Walk stays? I'm planning very very short stays at these exact hotels next year, but I'm on the fence.

For the Med cruise you're doing in 2014, are you going with DCL? We had considered both DCL and NCL Epic for our med cruise this year but Disney won out in the end. We had a fantastic time but didn't get to do much on the ship. I'm sure you will have a wonderful trip :)

I would be happy to post my info on my stay at Harbour Lights - it won't be until January.

Cruise on DCL!

Just so ya'll don't think living in your timeshares full-time is always fun and games...

We are staying at Club Intrawest in Sandestin Fl and over the 4th it rained for four days straight (local news claimed 19 inches). I have never seen so much rain since I went through a typhoon in the Philippines.

CI was great. They actually have a small movie theater ( for about 35 ) in the building and played movies all day. We had our son and his girlfriend, daughter and sister and brother-in-law visiting. Lots of family game time. Should have went to the gym more, oh well, next time.

6 hours on the beach today plus church, taking the wife and daughter out to lunch and a cook-out for dinner and the delayed fireworks from the 4th

My wife joked about buying a house today, I almost had a heart attack. I hope she was just joking.
