...to remember those killed or wounded, and the lives that were changed forever,
...to comfort the young mother who still shakes as she remembers hiding behind a display case, shielding her 2 year-old son's body with her own, begging him silently not to talk or cry so that the gunman might not find them,
...for the police officers, deputies, and state troopers who went into a crowded mall full of innocent Christmas shoppers, with guns drawn against an unknown gunman firing an assault rifle who had no description, and whose location wasn't known,
...for the 911 operators and supervisors trying to handle the flood of emergency calls, comforting the callers and trying to find out where the gunman was, while all the time hearing the sounds of gunfire over the phone lines,
...for the fire/EMS crews that handled the aftermath, and saved 2 victims that wouldn't have made it without them,
...to remember the young girl who came to our car after school, crying and panicked because her mother was supposed to be Christmas shopping at that mall, and because the cell circuits were jammed she couldn't reach her mother to make sure she was OK,
...to pray for the problems that led a 19 year-old kid to believe that this was the only way out, and for the others that may be reaching that point,
...for a certain future DISboarder, who stood at the door to Von Maur a few days later looking at the memorials and tributes that covered the doors, walls, ceiling, floors, and railings, his eyes locked on a paper heart obviously cut out by a child, and inscribed with the words "We miss you Mommy"
...to stand with those from Virginia Tech, Columbine, Paducah, Jonseboro, and all the others that came before, praying that it never happens again and knowing that, somewhere, it almost certainly will.
No humor today. Just a vain attempt to understand.
