One Way Flights

Hi guys,

We have a trip planned 9/28/19 - 10/5/19. I have started looking at flights. It has been several years since we have flown so I am getting back in the groove of watching prices. DH has some Delta skymiles and I have found a flight I like and we can use points (there are 4 adults travelling) and cash. Only problem is I cannot find a return flight that works. I know things can change, but I am hesitant to book the one way flight. If I do book the one flight and later add on the return flight will that cause any issues? I hope to book with the same carrier.

The return flights available at decent times are way expensive and I would not be able to use DH's points (does not have enough and they are expensive to buy). Really do not want to be at the airport at 4 am on our last day.... Anyone have any experience with this?

There should be no issue booking separate, one-way flights. Even with different airlines. You'll have 2 separate reservations.

Thanks guys, not sure why I am so hesitant. This waiting game you have to play with rates is just so frustrating.

Are you going to go, regardless of what return flights you can find? Buying two one-way tickets is not a problem (I do it often for domestic flights - things are different internatinally). However, in your case, what happens if you never find a return flight you are willing to buy? You either have to buy something you don't want (higher price/bad times) or loose what you've paid for the outbound flights. Of course, if you're going to go no matter what, this doesn't apply.

I book one way flights a lot.

When we go to Disney, there is a Southwest flight going TO MCO from one of our local airports that is a great time for us, and is usually cheap. But there isn't usually a great flight home on Southwest. We have found an American airlines flight coming home that is usually cheap and at a perfect time for us. So we have booked one ways frequently like that.

Booked JetBlue from my flight to Disney and return flight booked on southwest today.

We are going to go no matter what, but I did not want to lose the one really good flight. In all the years I have flown I have always books both legs of the trip together. Not sure why I am a bit hesitant to book them separately. I did not buy it yesterday and of course today it costs more. Guess I will keep watching and see if it goes back down again. When it does I am jumping on it!!

There is no longer a benefit to booking RT on the same airline domestically. Book the flight down and then start looking at all airlines for the way back.

I'm another person that books one-way flights all the time - - sometimes it's because of price and other because of times.

I would book it ASAP It is highly unlikely to go back down.

There was a time, years ago, when it was cheaper to book flights round trip, but I haven't done this for 15-20 years. I'm always looking for the most reasonable, best time, and opportunity to use frequent flyer miles, which often means using two different airlines ---- or at a minimum, booking the flights separately. Never, ever had any problems or issues doing this.

We are going 9/27-10-6 and I must check 5x/day for rates to change. They say once it hits the 4 month mark rates lower but it's still not happening. Also, I was told to hit CTRL+N when searching so it doesn't know you have looked that way the rates aren't inflated because they know you're desperate. I found a good rate for 9/26 $95 one way but then we'd have to book a hotel for a night which is fine with me but I'm not pulling the trigger for that 1 way yet.

Be open to using different airlines for each flight. Nothing at all wrong with that, and it might be the key to saving money in this case.
