One way car rental fee...

I have a question for anyone who's rented a car recently...specifically for those who rented from one place (airport? Disney resort?) and drive yourself/family to port, and or vice versa (from port to mco) after the cruise?

If so...did you have to pay the one way fee? Since your pick up and drop off are 2 different places?

I thought I read somewhere that that fee does not apply in Florida..?

One-way fees, can sometimes apply, and sometimes not. You have to read the fine print on your rental agreement.

We rented a minivan in April for a one way trip from Miami Airport to Ft. Lauderdate Airport. It was only a 24 hour reservation so I'm not sure if the fee would have applied if it were a longer rental. My receipt shows Base Rate ($29.10) and Taxes ($12.95) Total $42.05. So I don't think there was a one way fee charged. I agree that you just need to read everything.

I estimate I've done over a dozen one way rentals, some 1 day rentals, others weekly, and have never had a one way drop-off fee. Not saying it doesn't happen but just hasn't happened to me yet. All of my one way rentals did take place in Florida, if that means anything.

We have done one-way rentals in Florida often. When I have looked at some rates, I have seen a "drop fee" listed in the price quote. I've never booked one with a drop fee. However, I have noticed that even without a drop fee, the prices are generally higher than they would be if the rental was returned to the same location. A few times, when checking prices, I would forget to change the return location and got excited to see a price drop only to realize my mistake with the locations. In the end, we usually still find decent rates.

The only one-way fees I have encountered were with Thrifty and Dollar. As someone else said, ignore any drop fee and look at the total cost of the rental. Sometimes those with a drop fee will be cheaper than those without.

I have also heard that one-way fees are no longer allowed in Florida, but have no first-hand knowledge to back that up.

We always rent from Budget which has no drop off fees. On our last cruise we rented a small SUV and the total cost was around $60. The rental center is not too far from the port (about 10 minutes) and they do run a shuttle. We also priced rentals at Thrifty but they had a $50 drop off fee.

We did a one way once from MCO and dropped it off at WDW and were not charged a one-way fee; however, when traveling to other places at times we have been charged a one way fee. I was told by a travel agent that this usually applies based on inventories and where you would be dropping the vehicle off. I always check the pricing to see if a one way fee is going to apply and factor it in to the total cost. The last one way fee I paid was $150 so they can be substantial.

We picked a rental at the Amtrak Station in Orlando, dropped it off at the airport without any fee. So we thought that was the norm.
We recently priced out cars for vacation to drop 30 minutes away from pick-up with a $168 fee (CA).

Keep calling the different agencies to see who can give you the best deal. It also depends on where you pick the car up. I wanted to pick up at the Disney World rental car area but they would not rent a car for less than three days (turned out to be Valentine's Day Weekend) and like you I wanted one way, one day. Thanks to other disboard members who convinced me this was not the only option, I continued to explore what was out there. Sure enough, if I picked up the car from the car agency that was near Downtown Disney, I could rent it for a day. It was a little more out of the way but saved us a lot of money. Also be aware that are additional taxes and fees if you are dropping off or picking up from the airport. Good luck!
