On all of our many visits to WDW, at least half of them have been split stays!! Now, I would not split the stay with more than two resorts, but some people do. It is very easy. When you are ready to transfer call bell services and they will come and pick up your luggage. You take transportation (or your own car) to the new resort and check in. Later that day your luggage will be brought over from the first resort and will be held at bell services. When you are ready for your luggage to be brought to your room, notify bell services and they will bring it to your room. Split stays are a wonderful way to see and enjoy more resorts. There is no charge for the transfer of luggage.
HOWEVER....all of that being said, be aware of some of the negatives.
Though there is no charge to transfer your luggage you will need to (or at least should) tip bell services at your first resort and bell services at the second resort.
The process can (not always) take up quite a bit of your day, so be prepared for that.
Once settled in your first resort, you might not want to pack everything back up again.
We have done this before, not by choice, but out of necessity (booked late over Spring Break and there was not availability at one resort for the entire stay).
Be flexible and laid back about it - and if you do not need access to your luggage right away at your "new" resort, even better! We kinda just let it happen as we were out and about and when we were finished - went to the "new resort" to check in. There may be a wait for your room to be ready AND for your luggage so have a plan.
Although we wound up not being able to really relax until we got to the 3rd hotel, we did a 3 hotel split stay out of necessity last time we went. We didn't really unpack all the way keeping in mind that we would have to pack up again. In the morning we would pack the suitcases and put them in the car then drive to the next hotel. We had already checked in on line so my husband just drove around awhile while I ran in and checked in and left perishables with Bell Services. Then off to the parks and back to our room when it was ready. I think it was like 1 day in BCV, 2 days at BWV and 3 days at OKW.
We didn't mind the moving and are doing another split stay this Oct (BCV and BLT).
We called the front desk when leaving AKV. Told the CM we were moving to BLT and tipped him. When we got to our room at BLT at night, we called down for our bags to be brought up. We tipped the CM who dropped them off.
We like the idea of going to the destinations closest to the resort we're at. Then moving to another resort that's closer to the remaining destinations. Less travel time means more time to enjoy the parks and the resort area.
WE took our first DVC trip last summer and did a three way split to try out the resorts. We did 2 nights at BWV, 2 nights at BLT, and then 3 nights at VWL. It was a bit much, but enjoyed getting to experience things. I don't have young children, however, and we had a rental car so that helped in terms of the luggage.
However, bell services can get things transferred for you. You check out of one and either bring your luggage to them or ask them to pick it up. It will be sent to the new resort for you and typically arrives in the afternoon.
Once you get to the new resort, check in, and get to your room, just give them a call and they will bring it back up!

We always do a split stay. Why? Because we love AKV for the experience, and BCV for the location. We usually stay 5 to 7 days each resort. The longer you can stay at each, the less of an issue it is. We had friends join us once - they stayed only 3 days at BCV and then 4 days at AKV and thought the change made it feel hectic for them. We arrived before them and left after them so we didn't feel hectic at all!
We decided to start our trip a day earlier and did a cash booking for 1 night at Kidani. We requested to stay in the same room but it was not a guarantee. In this case will they just move our bags from one room to the other or will we need to have them picked by bell services ? If we do need to switch rooms , we are hoping that when we return for a swim around 2 that we will be in the new room! Not sure if this happens very much?
