I am thinking somewhat far ahead: reservations for Christmas 2013 but I like to have things straight in my head.

We will be short about 10 points due to the reallocations at BLT. This includes borrowing all points from the following use year. I was considering the one time disney use points but can I do this at the 11 month window or do I have to wait until 7 months? It seems silly to have to wait until 7 months if you want to book at your home resort (but I think I read somewhere that this is only available at 7 months). Please correct me if I am wrong which I hope I am.

Should I be correct, then my other option is to request a point transfer from someone. How does this generally work?

Any other bright ideas from all you experts? Not really in the mood to add on.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

You cannot purchase the one time use points until your 7 month mark. As for a transfer, it's pretty easy to do (or atleast it was for me). I purchased some points from someone off of these boards, and he had them transferred in to my account. The process was really simple. However, make sure the points you have transferred have the same home resort as the resort you're wanting to book at 11 months, or you will be in the same position you would be in with the one time use points.

also if you do a point transfer remember the points you get can be banked, but they cannot be borrowed. be sure to get points that will be usable for Dec 2013.

Thank you for the reply. I like the fact that you found this easy to do. Do you just watch the rent/trade board until someone puts up the points you need? I am guessing use year does not matter (unless I need to bank them) just home resort is important so that they can be used to reserve at the 11 month mark.

You're welcome! I'm a fairly new member. We just bought in last June. We are taking my extended family next summer, so I knew I was going to need a few extra points to make sure I could get what I was trying for. We bought at BLT and planned to stay at VB originally, so I watched the Rent/Trade board for both BLT and VB points. I ended up finding someone who had a smaller amount of VB points for either rent or transfer, so I went with those. I was able to bank the points I got from him (they were June 2011 points), but I called MS before we completed the transaction and told them what the UY was to make sure they were bankable. In addition, the person who transferred them in for me also double checked with MS.

As it turns out, we didn't get what we wanted at VB at 7 months, so I used the extra points that I had transferred in to change from a lakeview to a MK view at BLT, so it all worked out fine, but if you know for sure where you want to stay, I'd definitely watch for points that are for that resort so you can use them and take advantage of the 11 month booking window. Hope this helps.:goodvibes

Also, I kind of stalked the renters/traders on the board.:rotfl2: I watched for a while, and I also looked at previous posts to make sure they had posted on the DIS before my transaction and to view posts where they had rented or transferred before. That might not be necessary, but it was scary for me to just pay someone via Paypal without knowing first that the points were in my account. Some posters say they have done a 3 way call with MS, but I didn't do that. I trusted the DISer I bought from, and it all worked out fine.

You might have a tough time finding someone to transfer only 10 points because that would use up their transfer for the year.

I was almost able to help you! Due to an unexpected event, we had to shift our June 2012 trip four days. We have an August UY and borrowed all our 2012 UY points for the trip. Due to the change, I will likely have 10 extra 2011 UY points left. I can bank those into 2012 UY, but i would have to use them by July 31, 2013. And I did not plan to be back by July 2013 - promised wife we would take a break from WDW for at least 1.5 years (been there twice in past year and once the year before that).

I am assuming that if you transfer points to someone's account, the UY stays the same, i.e. if I transferred these 10 points to someone the latest (with banking) they could use them would be July 31, 2013. Is this correct?

Stinks for me, as i borrowed all our 2012 UY points AND bought 22 one-time use points from DVC to round the trip out. When I had to shift the dates, the same resorts were not available. I have no problem with where we are staying - we had a split stay with BLT (4 nights) and VWL (5 nights) and are currently booked for all 9 nights at VWL. I just hate wasting my 10 points (or trying to transfer them); would rather use them myself. We are waitlisted for BLT for the first part of the trip. However, to compound issues, I will have to make a hard decision on March 31 of this year if we have not gotten our wait list - bank the points to 2012 UY and sell/transfer to someone else or roll the dice that our wait list will come through before our early June trip (if I bank the points I will have to cancel wait list as I will have no points left and already made my one-time purchase for the year).

Oh wait, can you even transfer points that have been banked? If not, then I guess I need to make a decision even sooner!

Call MS and plead your case for an exception to the 7 mo rule on one-time points. After all, your problem results from their reallocation, which you did not expect.

Banked or borrowed points cannot be transferred.

I doubt they will start making exceptions to the 7 month rule. It's only fair to the other members who own at your resort to have the home priority window when competing for reservations without having other points bought to take reservations.

has this ever worked before? i've never heard of MS making an exception like this...and while the reallocation of 3 years ago came as a surprise, that is hardly true any more.

if you have time to plan ahead and look for a transfer (and you do), that would be a more productive strategy.

I agree - never heard of that happening, ever.

Thank you all for your replies.

I have another question. I will also be booking shortly for Christmas 2012. I will be using all my 2012 points and borrowing some from 2013. jjk3will probably not be able to transfer me the points this month in time as their plans are not yet finalized. If however, they transfer them to me in March before the banking deadline, will I be able to call MS and have the points reallocated so that I use those 10 this year and bank 10 of my 2012 points into 2013 which will solve my problem for 2013. It sounds complicated but I think I should be able to do it. I hope that they do not have to cancel and rebook the reservation in order to reallocate!!! Thankfully it is only 10 points that I am juggling and not 200!!!

...
jjk3, if you are able to transfer them this week, please PM me and we can work out the details.

First, banked points cannot be transferred so it would appear that jjk3's points cannot be transferred. Secondly, the ONLY place on the DIS where rental and transfers may be offered or requested is on the DVC Rent/Trade Board.

Please ... don't try to offer or ask for a rental, reservation or transfer on any other forums except the DVC Rent/Trade as that can/will result in an infraction.

Asking questions about the One-Time-Use points available from MS is fine, as is asking about how a transfer would work.

Thanks.
