One or Few Children Experiences...

Can anyone share their experience on a trip wtih just one child or maybe one or two. Our 16 year old is the only non-adult signed up so far for an almost full trip to France. It never occurred to me that he'd be the only one. I'm sure it will be fine, well hope it will be fine. He's more than comfortable around adults, and I assume the adults all knew there could be kids. I just need to reset that video image I have of all the families biking together...ha! Would appreciate any insight. Thanks!

My first ABD (a family trip) there was one 21 year old, and the rest of us were at least in our 30's (most of us were older than that. ) She didn't seem to have any issues, although I'm sure 21 is different from 16.

But the Adventure Guides will do a fantastic job of engaging him. I really wouldn't worry about that; they excel at it. And as long as you signed up for a family trip, people had to have known there were going to be kids.

As you say, it will still be a great trip. Just a slightly different great trip.

(Most schools are not out yet in late May, and it's close enough to the end of the school year, I don't think many parents can take their kids out of school. That first ABD was a family trip in May, and it ended up being all adults.)

On the trips we've been on, by 16 most of the kids are hanging with the adults anyway. My DD15 was right on the edge on our most recent trip. She spent some time with the other kids and some with the adults. The younger children occasionally got on her nerves (not anything bad, just b/c they were 10 or 11), and I know our next adventure will see her at the adult table full time.

I would be willing to bet your trip won't look very different for your family from how it would be if there were plenty of kids signed up. Don't worry, the guides will make sure your son feels connected and engaged. He will have a great time.

Our London/Paris trip in May had an 8th grade boy, his 5th grade sister, and our almost 19 year old daughter - the rest were 40-60's. it was wonderful. The younger two were well traveled and very pleasant. We all spent time as one group. The guides were very careful to make sure everyone felt included at all times.

One guide said to me in private that he was so impressed with our daughter, because often teens on the trips at that age can be very solitary & plugged into their iPods, but she was so enthusiastic and engaging. I told him, "that's because this is HER trip!" .

We all had a great time and most of the group still keeps in touch!

Appreciate you sharing your experiences! Seems like it happens quite a bit which is good to know. I was never considering this an issue really just different than what I thought would happen. Thanks again!
