This was a tough one for me. My favourite movie is Requiem for A Dream thanks to it's brutal honesty and vivid visuals, but it's not my pick for #1.

My pick is Snatch, the spiritual successor to Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Laden with dry comedy and gangster style, Snatch will have you rapt and in stitches at the same time.

Not safe for the DIS though...

What's your pick?

The Little Foxes with Bette Davis

One flew over the cuckoos nest.

Just watched that all the way through for the first time yesterday. It was on tv. I could never watch the whole movie because that nurse is pure evil and scary.

Eta: Having seen it, I do not think EVERYONE should see this movie, btw.

I was going to say "It's a Wonderful Life" but since a PP already said it for me I can pick another great classic that I think everyone should watch.

"Meet Me in St. Louis"
If you haven't seen it you aren't seeing the references in MK.
One Main Street USA they have the Trolley show and sing "The Trolley Song" from the movie.
You can also hear the instrumental of "Meet Me in St. Louis on Main Street USA when its not too loud (I heard it much easier at the station then iI ever have walking down the street)
Also in CoP they make references to the World's Fair and the "new fangled" trolley.

This is also the movie that gave us "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".

I took the question as referring to a film everyone should see during their lifetime. . .

But I may have misunderstood, so to be clear, I don't think anyone should sit their 5 or 6 yr old down to watch "The Godfather". :D

Network, it came out in the 1970s but predicted how our tv networks are today.

My runner up is Deer Hunter, aftermath of the Vietnam war on three men. I have only seen it through once.

"The Deer Hunter" is a great film; not for everyone, but one of my favorites too.
