I found this web site today:

www.onemillionmoms.com

"One Million Moms is an online communtiy of mothers aimed at stopping the exploitation of our children, especially by the entertainment media (TV, music, movies, etc)."

There is also www.onemilliondads.com and www.millionyouth.com .

This is a way that we can make a difference in the world our children or grandchildren grow up in.

I know a lot of us have different ideas about what is acceptable for our children to see. This site is for people that think today's tv shows are too raunchy. You can make a difference!

If you don't see anything wrong with what you see on tv, just hit the "back" button! :flower1:

What is the goal?

Is it to pressure the sponsors to stop buying ads on the shows people object to?

Isn't the news nearly as bad sometimes?

How about just not watching it?

Shows that don't get many viewers get canceled pretty quick without undue pressure.

Yes, the goal is to get sponsors to pull their funding, possibly getting the show off the air before it would otherwise be canceled.

I do not watch those shows. Some shows just cross a line that shouldn't be crossed. Putting pressure on advertisers is the only way that I (you know, the little guy) can make a difference.

One Million Moms is part of the American Family Association http://www.afa.net/

I'd suggest you review the AFA site.

I just went to this site. Can't say that I agree 100% with everything they support, but still very pro-family.

:confused3

To be honest with you, if I don't like/agree with what is on the television, I turn the channel.

I wouldn't want any "moms" making decisions for anyone else other than themselves and their families.

Edited to add---

OMG! I just looked at their website...They are AGAINST Desperate Housewives!!!!!!!!!! What the heck?

I am an adult--Why would these "moms" want that show pulled?

They should monitor their own children and not worry what others are watching.

Crazy.

No thanks. I don't need any group telling me that Desperate Housewives isn't appropriate for my eight year old grandson. I figured that out for myself.

I'll continue doing what I've always done--turn the channel when something I find offensive is shown.

Sorry to disagree with the OP but I am very successful at monitoring my child's programs right here at home. I don't want these choices to be out of my hands. Don't buy the product or don't watch the show. There are now hundreds of channels to choose from. Use your remote.

Basically, the campaign works like this:
1. A concerned parent registers to join OMM. They will begin receiving an average of one e-mail per week alerting them to an action that needs to be taken.

2. The "e-activist" clicks on a link in the e-mail which takes them to an action page where they either use a default letter provided, edit the letter to their taste, or write a letter that more personally reflects their views. They fill-in their name and e-mail address, and submit the letter.

3. The letter is sent via e-mail to a list of relevant decision-makers.

Click a link, send their default letter. Somehow it seems that activism should be --- more active?

I have an evil urge to join and edit their default letters into intense support for the shows they target. I love Desperate Housewives and watch Without a Trace and NYPD Blue on occasion. My older kids are both playing with the Lego sets right now and the Toddler just went down to bed. I don't care if adults want to watch shows not appropriate for children at 8pm on a school night. But if some of these Moms have a hard time finding alternate entertainment, I'd be more than happy to give a few suggestions.

Ditto! I also find these people to be.......NUTS!!! JMHO :D

I agree.

When my 12 year old neice is with me, there are certain things that are not on the tv, radio or video game console. It just seems like common sense to me.

I hardly see shows aimed at adults, starring adults to be the exploitation of children.

*gasp* BR shouldn't be watching Desperate Housewives?? I had no idea! The show is totally kid friendly! I guess it's a good thing I can tape it and watch it when he's asleep....assuming he's not asleep at 9 pm.

Y'know folks..they invented the V-Chip in TVs for a reason. YOU can set what is/isn't allowed on your tv with it. Usually by selecting it from the menu when you hit 'menu' on the TV remote.

I agree. Change the channel. And I certainly do... usually to the OFF position. I think it's high time the moral tone of the country is changed. I know I'm not alone on this, even here on these boards.

Hmmm . . . And who gets to decide what is "moral" and what isn't? I don't like the idea of any group making those decisions for the rest of us. If you don't like what you see on TV, I can certainly understand that. You get to choose what you watch and what your kids watch . . . but you don't have any right to choose what we watch in my house.

Ooops. I guess I should have hit the back button.

The conservative Christians decide what is moral and what isn't, GEM. Duh! *thonk*Who did you THINK was making the decisions? It sure ain't the wacko liberals. :teeth:

Please do not turn this into a political thing. This may come as a shock to you but I know conservative Christians who keep their noses out of other peoples business and I know some "wacko liberals" (in this case they really are wackos) who want to ban Song of the South because it's not PC.

Insanity runs rampant on both sides of politics (isn't that what makes it fun!?). That's not what this issue is about.

The AFA is one crazy right wing group. There are crazy left wing groups. Both would love to ban stuff, just for different reasons.

We, the average Americans have to stand up against censorship. Censorship goes against everything this nation stands for.

Sorry,Esme..that was my extremely pathetic attempt at being funny. I apologize.
