I am sure this has been discussed, but I searched and didn't find anyhthing exactlty like my question, so here it goes.

I REALLY want to try and bring only one lens to WDW on my next trip (Star Wars weekend, Flower & Garden etc). I could be convinced on one and a nifty fifty for low light. Last year for my DCL Med cruise I rented a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM and fell in love. I mean in lurrrve with this lens. If I could afford it I would own it. So thinking about renting it again. However, I am not 100% sure that this would be the best option for the parks and all of the events I am going to. Plus I like low light shots too, and this is ok in low light (maybe not as good as a nifty?)

PS- I own a kit and a telephoto
Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS but I really prefer wide angles in general and have had uch luck with this lens and my shots , so what do you all think?

Sounds like you are going to have to make a sacrifice. Which are you most willing to part with - good speed, or good reach?

If it were me, I would sacrifice good reach because that can sometimes be remedied simply by changing where you are standing. I too prefer wider angles and low light performance.

If I had to commit to one lens, probably a fast 35mm if it is an option.

an f1.8 or f1.4 is better for low light and the Sigma 30mm 1.4 is selling for around $250 (used) but it's obviously not as wide as the 16-35. The Canon 15-85 is also a good choice

I agree. I will look into the 35mm. I am probably going to rent one if it is out of my price range so anything is an option! Thanks.

I took my 28mm 1.8, and to my surprise, I rarely missed my ultra wide. In fact, my 28 is quickly becoming my favorite lens.

If I was restricted to one lens for WDW, it would be a 24-70 f2.8. A 35mm would not work well for stage shows, the Safari or anywhere else that I would need extra length. It could get a little tight for character meals, but I have made my 28-70 f2.8 work. Its not the best lens for everything, but will work the best for most. The 2.8 gives enough lowlight (depending on your camera body) to cover many situations, including some of the lower light rides. Again, this recommendation is only if I was forced to carry one lens!

Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS. It's not L glass but it's pretty close. It's on my camera 95% of the time at Disney. It's relatively wide, and if I want a little more reach I crop my shot later at home.

I would not worry about dark ride shots, that would free you up on really fast glass. Bring the lens that going to give you the most family snapshots you can acheive! Get great family photos that should be the pririty I think

I can't do just one lens most of the time. It's like tying a hand behind my back and just doesn't make sense for me. I do often take my 28-105 and stuff the nifty fifty in a pocket or bag. It works well for me when I want to travel light. And I don't think of a fast prime as just for dark ride shots, as has been suggested. I like to put a fast prime on as my walk around at night in the parks. But that's me. It really comes down to what you want to shoot when you're there.

Did you accidentally type an I instead of a U in shutter? I do that all the time.

:rotfl: omg Yes I did oops. That's what I get for using an ipad in bed late at night!

If you're using the 18-200 then that means you have a crop camera so if you never ever want to go full frame then you should try the Canon 10-22 for a truely wide angle experience (the 16-35 on full frame is the equivalent of 10-22 on crop). 16 mm isn't really wide when used on crop (equal to ~26mm on a 35 mm or FF camera) and the EF-S 10-22 is less than half the price of the 16-35 (but not F/2.8 though).

I've had a 10-22 mm for my crop cameras which has been replaced by the 16-35 to cover full frame duty (I have on crop and one FF body).

Yeah, one day I will go full frame but probably not too soon. I just bought a t3i. I am pretty happy with it. I take pictures for fun, for my blog and for trip photos and that's about it. i assume in about 2 years I will want to upgrade to a 5D. The lens I buy will most likely be a 17-40 L though, if I want a wide I will rent it. I will give the 10-20 a try thanks!

I own this lens as well. It's on my camera 90% of the time & was the only lens I brought to DL last fall. Great on all the rides & goofing off in line :)
