We are staying on site but only need to get a one day ticket which I can't seem to order in advance. We will receive our magic bands at check in but can't make fast pass reservations because our ticket won't yet be purchased. My questions are - can I buy a one day ticket at DTD the evening before and can I have it put straight onto the magic band? If I then go online that evening to make fast pass choices how does this transfer to magic band that I will already have received? Any help appreciated.

Does this not work for you? Because you are in UK?

https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/tickets/

The link automatically diverts to the uk Disney site where we can only buy multiple day unlimited passes (7/14/21 days). It's not really a problem if we have to purchase on the morning then so be it, but we are going for a 4 park challenge so it would be nice not having to line up for tickets and fast pass on the day.

Well then, you can do everything you said in your original post. Buy a ticket in DTD, link to your MDE account and then you can do your fastpasses.

The Magic Band itself doesn't hold the ticket information, or any information actually. The MagicBand links to a big data base that holds your information and it reads that information. The ticket doesn't get attached to your Magic Band. It gets attached to your My Disney Experience (MDE) account. Once the ticket is linked to your MDE account then you can make fast passes. The Magic Band is linked to your MDE account, too. As long as you can see your tickets, your fast passes and your MagicBands in your MDE account, then your MagicBands will work as your tickets. :)

Don't worry. The CM that sells you the ticket at DTD can make sure everything is linked up for you. :)

Thanks, this is very helpful I'm not very sharp with technology and couldn't get my head around how it all works together.
