Has anybody ever used Once Upon A Child ?

We've purchased from them before and while DH was in there the other day he asked about how their business works.

They said they purchase the items outright and that it's not consignment.

Ok, I called the store 2 days ago and they said bring everything in. They call you in 1 hour and when you come back they give you a quote for what they will pay. She said it's all computerized so it dosen't matter who accepts your order, it's all the same prices.

She said bring everything in baskets, or boxes and that if something is a set try and have it matched up. Not to bring anything in bag.

OK, I spent a few hours yesterday, sorting, washing clothes, matching sets, folding everything nice and neat, cleaning out stuff, etc.

We had already had a pile of stuff from when we cleaned out DD room a few weeks ago. We found tons of stuff, new, unopened, never used, still has tags on, etc.

I took in a nice Graco Quattro double stroller, a matching Graco pack n' play, with a bassinett, and changer, a rocking glider, a crib mattress, a full baby room emsemble (I mean everything) all of the stuff from DD room (video games, movies, DVD games, DS games, computer games, all new unopened, un-used) 1 box of girls clothing, some new with tags and 5 moving boxes of boys toddler clothes 2-4T, all name brand Carters, Tommy, Childrens Place, Gymboree, etc. of the 5 boxes about 2 grocery bags worth still had tags on them.

it took me about 15 minutes to haul everything in the store. I came back an hour later and they offered me $41 for everything.

I was floored to say the least. I told them that was extremely low and they just kinda scoffed at me. DH and I agreed not to take less than $50 for just the stroller alone.

They were slightly dis-pleasant with me when I said I'd pass. Another girl came over and was like " Oh, did they go over the quote with you ?" I said yes, they did and she replied with " So you don't want the $41 ?" no, I didn't.

So then, it took me about 20 minutes to haul everything back to the car, since it was all dis-shuffled and not all pack up nice and neat how I had brought it in.

Was I just like wwwaaaayyyyyyyyy off thinking they would offer more. I mean when I called and asked about prices, there were no where near close to what they explained over the phone.

I have never heard of this store but I would have laughed at them and brought everything back to my car just like you did. That sounds like a total ripoff. I would not shop there anymore either.

I have bought from them a lot over the years, but the only time I took clothes in they didn't want anything I had- everything was "too worn, out of style, or not our type". I don't think I've been back since.

Find a consignment sale in your area. You will probably make a couple of hundred $$ from your stuff instead of $41 and that is with the 40% the sale takes off the top. I love the seasonal consignment sales in our area - plus you set your own price!

I have a few friends who have had the same experience with that store. Every thing goes into the store nice and neat and they threw half of it on the floor while they were sorting through what they wanted. Then they pulled out only a few outfits as what they would take. One friend made them refold everything they had tossed around. I heard a few similar stories about Plato's Closet too. It's a brilliant idea, but many of my friends refuse to shop there. Myself included.

I prefer to consign my things at the local semi-annual children's consignment sale. I find it very worth my while. Even if all I do is clothes I make at least $100. I made over $300 this last sale. I'd look for one in your area.

I buy lots of stuff from Once Upon A Child. I love this store. We actually have 2 near us. I can get brand name clothes for a fraction of the cost new. I have gotten clothes, coats, shoes, toys, books and dvd's for great prices. I have also sold to them off and on, and have been fairly pleased with what they gave me. I havent had baby furniture for a while, but if I remember correctly they didnt pay out very much for what I had and I sold the bigger stuff at our yearly yard sale. Sounds like you didnt get a very good quote for the amount of stuff you had.

I took a highchair to them and they wanted to give me $18 for it, it was hardly used, it was the extra for my mom's house and was over $100 new. I would consider ebay or craigslist. I made over $700 on my daughter's clothes this past fall on ebay. Good luck!

I use a similar store called Kid to Kid and they have always been pretty fair on their quotes... however, for items I think could be of particular value I usually sell on Ebay because I can make more money :goodvibes

I hate bringing stuff there bc they pay so poorly. I get the same additude from them about the - out of style, stained etc. Well have they looked at what is hanging on their racks??? I did shop there 13 yrs ago when we adopted DS. I found great items at great prices but pretty much don't step foot in that place any more.

I do participate in a local Cute Kids consignment Sale. It is run by a mom in town. I consigned over 200 items w/ her and came home with a check of almost $400! I earned 70% of the sales (normally 60% but she has a way to earn a higher amount). I am getting ready for the spring sale in the next few months. I am weeding out the baby toys and stuff the kids don't play with anymore. Check them out it is a nationwide sale. I was very nervous about doing it but once I got going entering everything online it was a piece of cake.

I have also sold stuff on CL and made pretty good $$ that way too. I stopped fostering newborns almost a year ago and was able to unload all my baby gear on CL. It went fast- I priced it fairly low but not too low.

Good luck

I have purchased a lot of items from them, especially when dd was younger, and gotten some really good deals.

I have found that they offer very little when buying and have gotten more and more particular about brands. I have not had a bad experience with the staff though. OP - what they offered you is so ridiculous! I would try craigs list, a tag sale in the spring or a consignment sale if you have one in your area.

mykidslovedisney - I sent you a PM.

I like to shop there but will never bother selling there. You were right to expect more but I'm not even a little surprised to hear how you were treated. Like those above me suggested consignment sales are a much better option!

I am going to give the one by the moorestown mall a try. I have some items I have been listing on Craigslist that haven't been selling.

I tried bringing clothes to our local OUAC once and they had the same attitude. Thing is, about 10 years ago people were happy with what they were offered because most people didn't buy/sell online. Now we all know we can get better prices but the staff at OUAC doesn't seem to realize that. ;)

I sell all my kids clothing, toys, furniture, etc online with local Craigslist and Kijiji. Not worth bringing to consignment shops anymore.

I agree. You'll do much, much better.

I had the same experience as you OP. Dismal. I do better and I'm happier with consignment. They treat me better and they are fair.

My experience with that store is the same. I too was insulted by their rude remarks..."marks on shoes....looks worn" I now donate my daughter's used clothes. Funny how everything I ever looked at in that store looked worn but they wouldn't take a lot of my stuff. I figure it's part of their plan to give you very little for what you want to sell. Not worth it!

Add us to the list of disappointed in trying to sell items there as well. We have used them several times over the years, however I pretty much decided it wasn't worth it anymore. We decided to do a huge goodwill donation for a tax write off and although it wasn't cash in my hands right now it will help us more financially at tax time! :thumbsup2

Great ideas and suggestions from the others as well!

This. I have also sent in items they did not take that were nicer than I saw on the rack. There was an outfit I bought at Walmart on clerance new for $3 and another girl I knew bought the outfit there for the same price used. I have found several things there for more than what I bought them new.

They have also told me that the tag on the outfit is too old, yes the label inside with the brand name was too old (but in perefect condition) WTH, I promise the kid won't know. And the whole thing about only taking pants that zip and snap, yeah thats just what I want my kid to wear when I am potty training :confused3

I just garage sale, its a pain, but I take all my stuff lol. Their loss others can have my nice stuff.

I asked about consigning with them several years ago on a mom's board. They got such a bad review for pay out that I opted to use my local twice a year consignment sale instead. With only 3 sales there, I've made over $500. Not bad since I don't have many big-ticket items to sell, just mostly clothes.

That offer sounds very low, even for OUAC.

I haven't sold anything there in years--my kids are bigger now and wear out their clothes before they outgrow them.

When I did sell there--I NEVER left the store while they looked through it. I stayed at watched as they looked at the item. One time they had a stack of items from another seller they were finishing up with, then they started going through my items and adding them to the previous sellers lot! I was glad I was there to see and correct it.

I also found that sometimes if you have really nice stuff they won't buy it. I came in once with some nice clothes--Jacadi, Catimini, Miniman, Oilily, etc. They told me most their customers weren't familiar with these brands and wouldn't buy them. They were mostly looking for brands like Gymboree, Baby Gap, and Carters.
