Once Upon a Child

Richmonder here too! I was wondering if Kid to Kid was any better than Once Upon a Child. I have a box of things I need to get rid of! So it's worth going there?

Yes, I'd say Kid to Kid it worth trying. I only sold there once but as I have posted earlier, It was a good experience. They seem fair and were totally polite. I'd be miffed at the attitude this other place seems to give

I had the same experience there. I was offered pennies for high end children clothes, (Gymboree, Ralph Lauren, Hanna Andersson) I took it because I didn't feel like hauling it back home. That was the last time I took clothes there. I found an independant that offers more money. I'd rather give it to Goodwill then consign to them again. I understand profit margin, but it wasn't worth it to me.

I feel the same way. I also give to Goodwill and consign some. I'm all for helping someone out.

I just don't like getting a fourth or less for my items (that are brand names and in great shape) and being told it's a good deal for me. Like I don't know it's a load. That doesn't make for a good experience. I have bought from them, but it has been much less after the selling fiasco. I just don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about them anymore.

Places vary even within chains, but that was my experience.

I just sold some items to them store. Yes, they do not pay well. It is because they only pay you 40% of their selling price. However, it does help families that cannot afford to pay retail prices for baby and kids items. So you are doing a good thing and walking out of there with some pocket money. I sold the a brand new in box Safety First playard manufactured in 2011 that had never been opened and they gave me $22 for it. I may not have gotten what it is worth but knowing someone less unfortunate will buy it, makes me happy.

It's not necessarily someone "less fortunate" that will buy it though--probably just someone looking for a good deal. There have been plenty of times that I could certainly afford to buy new (of whatever, not necessarily baby items), but looked for good deals through ebay, craigslist, thriftstores, etc. just to save money.

I think if your goal is to help less fortunate families who can't afford items for their baby, maybe donate the items to a crisis pregnancy center, an organization through a church, battered women's shelter, etc. :)

How would i find a consignment sale?

I'm currently pregnant and would like to shop and then sell when things are outgrown. I've hoarded all my boys stuff because I knew I wasn't done. I think I'm done this time and would like to sell stuff, but not at OUAC.

I think you would probably find some consignment sales if you type in your area and state, "consignment sales", and the year (just to get the current stuff). That's how I did it. There are some blogs that promote consignment sales too so don't rule out looking at those for resources.

Hope this helps.

Once upon a child is a last resort for us. I've taken an exersaucer and swing and got about 10$ a piece. But we were just trying to get rid of the stuff.

I took a highchair to them and they wanted to give me $18 for it, it was hardly used, it was the extra for my mom's house and was over $100 new. I would consider ebay or craigslist. I made over $700 on my daughter's clothes this past fall on ebay. Good luck!

I have tons of really nice stuff from my 11-month-old. I have been consigning stuff and make about 50 bucks, but that even includes things with tags on them. Most of my stuff is Baby Gap. How do you sell the clothes on Ebay? In bulk, individually, or in bulk by size?

I donated loads and loads of baby items, kids clothes, toys, adult clothes, etc. to Brothers and Sisters. And the people that I saw shopping at my local Once Upon A Child seemed to be low income families. That is not to say that there were some people looking for deals, as I did skim the racks, but there is a difference. As just like you said you shop at those places sometimes to save money, there are some people who shop at those places all the time because they don't have the means to shop elsewhere. So if places like this didn't exist, and people didn't sell their used goods, those people would not have the opportunity to purchase baby necessities at prices they could afford.

Yeah, I hate that chain of stores. It is sickening to be offered such a low amount on things you know are worth a lot of money. I took a brand new pair off Ugg Cardy Boots in that are $140 and was offered $12 for them!!!! I laughed an left. I was hoping for like $30 just because I wanted to get rid of them. I ended up selling on Craigs List for $90.

No... OUAC is not a charity, it's a for profit business. If you want to feel like you are doing something good stuff should be donated to Goodwill, etc. Plus, if you are deciding who seems to be low income by appearances, you are most likely wrong.

I tried using ebay for a few of my kids stuff but it's more of a pain than it's worth with the amount of clothes that I had. I ended up using Just Between Friends consignment sale and in three sales last year I made almost $1000! They give you 70% of your sales and you can price your items how you think they should be. Check out their website to see if there is one in your area.

When my DD's were young I averaged spending between $5-6,000 a year at Gymboree. Always treated stains immediately, clothes never went into a dryer etc. Because I bought so much, the clothes were not worn looking at all.
I took 3 years with of Gymboree clothes to OUAT and they offered me $70. Now that sounds like a lot- but that was tons of clothes.
I was so irritated I said "no, thanks!" and said I would rather give it away. They said " well, you can talk to the manager". At that point it was the principle of the thing. Took me forever to load all those clothes in my car.
On my way home I stopped at my neighbors who had 3 girls that the oldest would be able to fit in the clothes. I am still so sad, years later, cause mom turned out to be horrid and the clothes are TRASHED! I had babied those clothes and a month later I see one of their girls wearing an almost $200 special holiday coat that had been worn once for a picture- outside playing with purple and blue ice cream all over the coat. I wanted to cry.
