President Bush won't listen to the 80 Nobel laureates or his own director of the National Institutes of Health, who all support embryonic stem cell research. Most importantly, President Bush won't listen to the overwhelming majority of Americans who call out for stem cell research.

If he didn't already have a really bad history this would be really embarrasing. Even his own party is going the other way. :sad2:

With a husband who has severe Parkinson's Disease, you don't even what to know what I think about Mr. Bush and that decision.

Announcing his veto to a roomful of supporters, Bush said, "If this legislation became law, it would compel American taxpayers for the first time in our history to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos."

Seems a bit hypocritical to me - isn't he expecting us taxpayers to support a lot of deliberate destruction of humans in Iraq???

I was livid when I learned about this today. He doesn't even try to represent this country. He's running this country based on his own personal views and morals and to hell with everybody else, what they believe and what they want.

PC or not, I really hate and despite that man.

Yes, as one who has family who would benefit from stem cell research, I am appalled at his stance on this. I have been accused in the past, on this board, of wishing an illness on Bush or his family, so that he can feel what it's like to see people die of a genetic degenerative disease. Far from it - I wouldn't wish this on anybody - including Mr. Bush!

I guess California will have to keep carrying the torch on this one.

Well said.

I personally think the man is living in his own little world.....and its very scary.:scared:

It sounds like a lot of YOU are living in another world. There are sources of stem cells OTHER THAN FROM EMBRYOS that have been proven to be much more effective. I really wish people would do some research before getting into emotional tizzies.

All I can say is I agree with you both....
:thumbsup2

The IRONY, he vetoes the RESEARCH bill and you demand research...:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I wonder decades from now, will George W. Bush go down as one of the worst US Presidents in History.

Anywho, he opposes the use of stem cells because they are "living beings", yet because of his decision to veto, those cells will just be thrown away. :sad2:

He's crazy. Always has been. No one would listen. They re-elected him! WTH?
Are there votes for an override on this one?

Same old "I hate Bush" from the same old "Bush Haters."

I have to say I'm not a Bush supporter, but he has held strong on his beliefs on this subject.

I do feel stem-cell research has promise for some people with serious illness, I also fell there is a need for this research but have mixed feelings on using human embryos.

No one is stopping PRIVATE or STATE funding of research.

No one is stopping PRIVATE or STATE funding of research.

That's why I really don't think much of this story. Other than the complete waste because the embryoes that will be destroyed at fertitility clinics, might as well use them. But nothing does stop private or state funding of research. If Nancy Pelosi feels that this is so important, then why doesn't she donate her salary. She's made enough in the hotel and restuarant business that she doesn't need it.

I can't understand why they have to waste taxpayer time and money on these damned bills all the time. They knew it would get vetoed, like the Iraqi funding bill, but the sent it up anyway.

Ahhhhh, two more years of do-nothing Congress. And this is different from the previous 12 how?

Vote them all out I say. They need term limits.

I'm kind of unsure about embryonic stem cells personally. Yes, there's a lot of research that has been done already, (a lot of it here in NJ where our state funds it) and those folks are saying that embryonic stem cells have the best potential for providing cures. My Dad has Parkinson's and HE is not all that convinced. His MD's in Tampa are telling him that even IF there was a massive influx in funding for this type of research, there's only a possibility that anything would ever come of it. He was told that there are already treatments out there that have been developed using adult stem cells and cells from umbilical cord blood that show promise.

The veto certainly isn't the death knell for research using embryonic stem cells, it is going on now and it will continue to go on. I would hazard a guess that NJ isn't the only state that funds it.

As always, YMMV.

It's a shame that it has to be this way, but when Bush is finally out of office and into obscurity (and history as the worst president ever), this bill will be passed by the next president. Doesn't even really matter who it is. As long as the Dems keep control of congress, the bill will be sent back and the next president will sign it, be he (or she) Democrat or Republican (or Bloomberg ;) ).

Bush couldn't successfully spell science, let alone understand the science involved in this research. He simply uses it as a political football to try to appease his far-right supporters.
