we went on carnival cruise last year...did the hair braiding under the pavillion in nassau...paid $100 ..full head breads for dd,6 (ear lobe length hair) and half braids for dd,14....I bargained and the women didn't like it, but did it...

so..do i do that again or use the on ship braiding? here are my questions...

When is braiding done? all 3 days for 3 day cruise?
Cost? i think both girls are doing half heads this time ...

Thanks!
Only 29 days to go! 8/4 Wonder

My DD, 5, did half head w/diagonal braids...was $18 total on board (I also tipped another $4 so was $22 total charge). The gal on board was VERY gentle w/my DD and very sweet...told me all about her same age daughter back in her home country. Do schedule it early as I went first day and had to schedule it for our last day onboard (day 7) to get a day at sea time!

Forgot to add that it is the BEST summer hair for girls...I watched how she did it on the boat and now do it for DD myself all summer long (we use our same Disney beads again and again!)...DD is on 2nd "mommie braiding" since we got home a month ago!

I agree, I would definitely do it on board. My niece had hers done the very first evening and loved it.

Also, you just never know on the island. I have heard some complaints about how they secure the braids at the end and that they fall out. Obviously that is not all of them, but if you don't think to ask, you may end up with this happening.

They start taking ressies around 5:00 or 5:30. I believe they started at 5:30 on ours and when we went down at 5:00, there was already a line. Also, I think the higher cat (cat. 1, maybe 2 & 3) can make these before. There were quite a few times (a lot more than in line), that were taken.

Normally on the first day starting at 2:30 either Deck 9 Midship or Deck 10 Forward you can make appointments. I just looked at two Navigators for 3 day cruises and they were different ending times and different places but both started at 2:30. You can always make an appointment later by going to the person(s) who is braiding and have them check their schedule and make an appointment. It is just easier to do it early and get the time you would like best.

It is more expensive onboard since you can not bargain. My DD has only had her hair braided on DCL. I am thinking her half head was around $33-35 w/out a tip both times.

We just got back from the Magic (6/25 cruise) and my DD11 had the half-head braids done. It was $2 a braid and she has 12, with beads. (She's still got 'em in, BTW, and they look great.) Even on the 7-day, the ladies were swamped with business the entire cruise...one told me they didn't even eat lunch. When our friends had to cancel an appointment, a lady and her daughter were sitting nearby, waiting for a cancellation and they jumped right in!

The braids onboard are like $2 a braid or so. I usually get 10-12 braids to do the front 1/2 of my head or my daughters. So it usually costs about 25-30 w/tip. My daughter had her whole head done on CC (These people are also hired by disney so give disney dictated (cheap) prices and do a good job). It cost us about $60 to get her whole head done. They did the front with cornrow braids (like 1/2 head) and the back was all single braids.

My DD kept it in for about 3 weeks. It did take forever to take out though.

My 11 yr old has had her braided onboard and on CC. She prefers the ladies at CC much better. The CC braids were much tighter and stay in much longer. The onboard ladies are very nice and it did work out to be cheaper, but they didn't last that long. It all depends on what your daughter wants. Mine likes to go home with fresh braids and have them last for a couple of weeks.

Can you book this in advance??? Like when you book excursions???

Not in advance but you can book on your first day at 2:30 somewhere Deck 9 Midship or Deck ten forward. They start taking appointments at 2:30 and will stop somewhere between 3:30-4:00 pm.
