There are other timeshares out there (Wyndham, Hilton) where owners can exchange thru RCI into DVC. From what I have read, getting DVC is like the holy grail, but also not as easy as it used to be. I think, but am not positive, that when DVC members use their points for Adventures by Disney, Concierge collection, DCL, world collection,.....those points are transferred over to RCI. I would imagine that since the advent of people renting their points out, there hasn’t been as much availability for RCI exchange. I know there are a few posters here that have both DVC and other timeshares that could shed better light on this.
Enjoy your stay at AK. Kidani has one of the best community halls in DVC. Love the pool table. Hope it is good pool weather.
Yes. RCI gets deposits when DVC Members use their points for something available in RCI. Disney also deposits some of the cash inventory they own. Other timeshare owners deposit their weeks or points into RCI to book the time DVC deposited. Timeshares each have different "trade values" in the RCI system.
Points Members use for Adventure By Disney, Disney & Concierge Collections are rented for cash. Proceeds for those rentals are credited to other Disney departments to pay for the member's choice.
I own both. More info about Rci deposits: Currently it appears that Rci deposits about 90% ssr, and some okw, akv, with a rare deposit of others. As opposed to about 5 years ago when there were 2br. I even got summer 2br dvc hhi once via Rci.
But those days are long gone. for the last 2 years, They are almost always 1br ssr. The “price” in rci for trade is quite high. Some systems like Hilton hgvc have a set hgvc points that trade into dvc via Rci.
Rci traders also pay an extra $190, like a resort fee, and also a $240 Rci trade fee on top of the annual fees for the Rci trader they used to trade in.
I traded for this summer into a 1br ssr. With all those fees, it was a almost a similar price to dvc annual fees, but i had Rci points that i needed to use.
The folks talk about getting SSR mostly. One was doing a two year ahead search and trying for BWV but she said it was years ago since she stayed there. She loved the location!
Thank you @CarolMN for that explanation. I understand that much better now. I’ve never used our points for anything except DVC.
@ldo that is probably the most understandable thing I’ve read about other timeshares trading in to DVC. It’s very tempting sometimes when I see things on the TUG site where you can buy someone’s timeshare for $1, but then you are stuck with monthly fees. I’ve been thinking about renting from the “last minute rentals” for other places.
My advice: don’t be tempted! I spend a ton of time managing my 2 other timeshares looking for good trades.
we have high demand summer hhi beach weeks that we don’t use anymore. So trading into dvc is pretty much a financial wash for us. But only because I get a high Rci points value for them.
Dvc is so easy peasy.
If you are considering it as an option, my advice would be to pick up Wyndham Grand Desert points on Ebay. The RCI membership is free with a Wyndham ownership. It has low maintenance fees for Wyndham's system and if you can't get SSR, you can always use it for Bonnet Creek. It costs about 126,000 RCI points to book SSR. That's $691.74 in maintenance fees (deeded to Grand Desert), plus the $239 exchange fee and $190 fee Disney charges. It's still much cheaper than owning at SSR and book using your points since a Grand Desert contract can be bought for only a few hundred bucks.
I think that the availbility of brokers to rent DVC members points has been a part of the reduction of traded out points, since what you get for rented points will more than cover an equivelent cash reservation/rental at the other resorts.
No more what do I do with my points if i am not going to use them at disney
