We also over the years have stayed both @ Disney as well as various nearby off-site locations. Liked them all for different reasons. The Disney properties are VERY expensive and you can save a LOT of money staying elsewhere. We always rented a car and then going out to eat or shop was never a problem. Food is also less expensive is you eat somewhere other then Disney.
Mostly it comes down to personal preference and your budget. We enjoyed the convenience of Disney transportation but others not so much. Disney is HUGE with LOTS of visitors, so clearly you aren't going to be the only people on the bus/monorail/boat.
Even if you stay on the property, which park(s) you plan to visit should also be a consideration. Staying near Epcot if you mostly go to MK wouldn't be my first choice.
