If gas keeps going the way it is, it will cost us about $400 for gas in the Class C to WDW in October! We are renting a class C for $800 for the week, paying $200 for our time at FW, and the gas price- this camping thing isn't so economical at all! We decided about 6 months ago to try the camping thing by renting before we purchased just to see if we really liked it. Now, I am thinking that this is a BIG mistake. On top of the cost above, anything above 600 miles, we have to pay $.25 per mile!! Any suggestions......

You could see if you could rent one locally in the Orlando area and just drive your car to Orlando, pick it up and then take it to the campground. If you can do that, it should save you quite a bit on gas. I know that their is a rental place on Orange Blossom Trail in Kissimmee. Then you could also have your car at the site for local runs to the supermarket or to the parks or other places in and around WDW you might go.

I hear ya! That's why we're going to try taking our camping gear (tent, air matress and sleeping bags) with us and fly to fort wilderness! Only staying for 2 nights and then going to a hotel though. But if it all goes well, we might try it again for longer.

I would honestly suggest tent-camping. My husband and I were chatting the other day and thought that with gas prices going the way they are, it will become much more popular and perhaps the day of the big RV is over? In all honesty, camping in a tent at FW is not exactly "roughing it". Although we own both a pop-up and a 5W now, we have also camped at FW in tents in the past and would absolutely do so again in the future ..... if need be. I would surely give it a deal of consideration before renting the RV, both for the ease of travel and for the cost differential ........ JMO. :earsgirl:

One of the reasons I wanted to rent an RV is because I thought that the ride down would be so fun! There is no way I can tent it! I am luxury all the way but want to try all the resorts at WDW including FW! Of course, for the price we are paying, we could have stayed in the cabins!!! At first we thought about WL but wanted the adventure of RVing. We are just going to have to bite the bullet and go for it!
We are leaving tomorrow for POP over Labor Day for a girls trip- WOO HOO- WDW here we come!

I don't understand this...We estimated we would spend approximately $66.00 per tank at $2.55 per gallon. The prices in our area right now are $3.30 per gallon making it $85.80. This is a difference of $19.50 per full tank we get. It will take us just under 3 tanks to get there from NC pulling a TT. If we were going to pay $200.00 in gas what difference is there to paying $257.50? We are talking $57.50. I personally don't think this is enough of a reason to not go RV'ing. Go for it. Breaking it down into smaller numbers doesn't make it as bad.

We use between 375-400 gallons of gas to drive our Motorhome from NH to Florida and back. I budgeted $3.00 per gallon for our December trip to FW. Gas in our area is 3.059 this morning.....I need to add another $23.60 to my budget. So far I am budgeting $1223.60 for gas. We're still going even if gas gets up to $4-5.00 per gallon. My husband mentioned last night that he may have to work some overtime to make up the difference but we're still going.

You're absolutely right, Billmel. I firmly believe that a lot of this gasoline crisis and the ensuing panic is being created by the media. I mean, the gas stations by me were swamped yesterday with people "topping off before the price goes up again". I'm sure most of these people would not have purchased gas otherwise. As far as RVing, gasoline is always a significant part of the budget. When the total expense of RVing is considered, I'm sure none of us who are seasoned campers would have advised anyone that it is an economical alternative for a vacation. It can be a very dangerous thing to assume it is inexpensive to RV based on the campground fees and nothing else. I think everyone needs to calm down about the gasoline situation and put things in perspective, like Billmel said.

Don't give up - I think you will love camping. Don't forget to figure in the cost of food if you do not camp - a big expense and if you camp you can plan days around breakfast and dinner at the campsite and save a great deal (just don't grocery shop on campus) - there are several large grocery stores right outside the gates
