OMG.....This stinks

You're thinking like a woman/wife/mom wondering how you can take care of everybody with your injury. Start thinking like a man/husband/dad: I am injured, therefore you're going to have to cut me some slack and cater to my every whim. I am hurting here, I'll be needing another Mickey bar and a drink. ;)
I guess "man bashing" is ok. I'm offended! ;)

If you are in a hard cast now in 4 weeks they might let you down grade to a soft cast/brace. Just be really careful now and let it heal to better your chances. My nephews have done this many times (hey they're boys and atheltes, they break things) and only once for each of them have they had to wear the hard cast the full 6 weeks.

I can totally sympathize with your predicament. I haven't had to deal with a WDW trip, but I did have to wrangle a toddler and have my house packed for a 600 mile move with a broken wrist. No fun! My cast was from the hand to the shoulder with my elbow immobilized at a 90 degree angle, and it was my dominant hand. The worst thing was not being able to brush my hair or use a ponytail holder- that really bugged me. I managed just about everything else- even got to be pretty good at writing, dressing, and bathing with just my left hand.

Be patient, let your family take care of you a little, and take it easy. You will still have a great time at WDW!

"Umbrella bags" like the kinds found at the entrances of "big box stores" work great to cover it :rolleyes1 Lets just say a kind employee at Walmart told us this on a trip to Pigeon Forge TN with my best friend who was in a lower leg cast/in a wheelchair and it was pouring as we were leaving, she even gave us extras to use later. They really came in handy at Dollywood in the rain. Now to really make everyone laugh........picture TWO pooh sized woman touring in Dollywood which is HILLY to say the least, in the rain, with one of the Pooh's in a wheelchair and a nonweight bearing cast.............AND the other pooh size woman pushing that w/c......UP those wet hills (ok, MOUNTAINS) .............and THEN we read the map with the statement "STEEP GRADE" not recommended for w/c's!!!! Oh well, it was a wonderful trip despite this and other issues, we just adapted and conquered same as we do every day when something challenges us!

Sam I see that you "got" the joke. If it makes any difference, I'm a guy. Totally intended as humor, and in that our friend the OP got a laugh, mission accomplished. :)

My son broke his arm in a pretty bad location the day after school let out for the summer one yer. I had a deal with the orthopedist that we would basically wrap him in bubble wrap all summer and give his arm the best chance to heal before our trip, but if he was still in a cast when we left, he would put him in a waterproof cast so that we could enjoy our trip. Luckily he was out of the cast before we left but perhaps you could negotiate something like that, which would also make showering easier as well.

I've also gone with an injury, although mine was my leg. I did a little stunt maneuver and broke my ankle as well as did a bunch of soft tissue damage to my knee and tendons above and below the knee. I wound up having to rent a scooter and everything, there was no way I could have walked. I have to say, everyone was so kind and helpful! Sure, it wasn't the same trip I planned on taking, and I loathe having to ask for help, and there was a part of me that wanted to die of embarrassment trying to maneuver that scooter on the bus, but you know what? It's still vacation, it's still WDW, and it's still better than being at home any day. You're going to have so much fun

I did Disney with a broken wrist and elbow, which happened 10 days pre-trip. I had a waterproof cast and convinced the doctor that I would keep my elbow in a sling if he wouldn't cast it, so the cast was only on my lower arm. We even did water parks with no problem. Yes, my husband did have to learn how to put my hair in a ponytail. But honestly, I barely noticed it and it didn't hurt. The most annoying thing was not being able to use my new camera and not having a ton of pictures from that trip because DH never thinks of taking pictures!

When I was 11, I had a bike wreck and pulled a muscle in my hip just a few days before a family trip (church - my dad had organized the whole thing). Even though it would sometimes freeze up (still cramps badly on occasion), I did fine - even without renting a chair. I know that's not the same as a wrist, but when you consider all the walking involved... (And you did ask about going injured, so...)

It's totally doable. As others have said...there is a lot of time between now and then that you'll learn adaptations and be much better at caring for yourself by then.

I love this! It's early into the recovery yet, you will be surprised what you can do by the time the trip comes. Do you have a girlfriend or someone close to you that will be house sitting that can help with the laundry? Some laundromats have services to wash and fold. I bet your husband would even get the suitcases down and gather the clothes to pack.

As far as water parks, they sell waterproof cast covers. Maybe you will even heal fast, but don't get yourself worked up. If it was your daughter you wouldn't cancel, but rather make it workable and enjoyable.
If I had a chance to get a Deluxe Disney trip and the need was to do it with one arm tied behind my back, wow would I be creative.
Speedy recovery and for the first trip ever, your dh knows he has to really step up.

DH broke BOTH wrists in a motorcycle accident 4 weeks before our first trip to Europe. :moped: I hate motorcycles (long story, why he had one). pirate: Well, he tried to HIDE it from, just like a little kid. :sad2: He really believed, he could hide his injuries from me. :crutches:

The charade lasted, all of about, three hours. I wasn't upset. but he got no sympathy from me. :charac2:I ordered a special harness, so he would have no problems handling his luggage. My vacation was wonderful and I didn't hear him complain once. :teeth:

Sorry, I can't find the "devil" emoticon. ;)

Haha! Well my injury was also due to doing something I shouldnt have been doing......taking out the trash! Usually my husband does it, but it was late and the kitchen trash can was full. I took it out to barrels, in the driveway. I didnt want to get my feet dirty, so I just threw on the closest shoes I could find...my sons size 13 flip flops. I was coming back up the steps to the house and tripped. Tried to grab the railing, but apparently only karate chopped it with my hand and broke the metacarpal bone below my pinky. Why I am in a cast from my fingertips to my elbow is something Ill never know.

My birthday is coming in a couple of weeks. If I get any kind of luggage harness, I WILL cancel the trip (and possibly the marriage!!)

I'm trying to look at the bright side...:sunny:

-you'll have a housekeeper to make your bed
-chefs to prepare your meals
-your family with you 24/7 who will hopefully help you all day long
-a fun vacation to take your mind off of your injury
Also, you will more than likely not see anyone you know, so you don't necessarily have to look your best.

Not sure if it will help, but maybe increase your calcium intake for the next few weeks

Hope you have a great trip.

in 2011 I was hit by a car while jogging about 6 weeks before our Disney trip. I broke my wrist, injured my shoulder, broke a bone in my lower leg and sprained my other wrist. We still went to Disney! I could still walk even with the break in the lower leg (non-weight bearing bone) but Disney walking was not going to be possible so I rented a scooter. My hard cast came off a week before the trip and I got a soft cast to wear to go along with the soft cast on my sprained wrist. Rides and such were no problem, packing I got help from my family. You learn to do a lot with one hand!! Doing hair is pretty difficult but everything else you will figure out one handed. Because of my shoulder injury and subsequent surgery I was putting bras on one handed for about 18 months lol! Hope your hand is feeling better soon!

Ouch! Are you in a boxer cast?

I do everything cheapo, stay at all stars, complain so I get a free night, use iron to eat grilled cheese sandwiches, use 5 year old refill cup, pool hop....., and im healthy, the world just isnt fair

That sounds great. Ive done a few Disney trips staying at $35/night I-Dr motels, with no pool, brought our own cereal for breakfast, to eat dry... had no refill cups and only bought 2 day tickets for our week long trip to FL. But...we still had a lot of fun :)

My oldest daughter who was 16 at the time broke her wrist about a week before our 2011 Disney trip. We didn't do any water parks and she didn't swim in the pools, just dangled her legs in while her little sister swam. I had booked parasailing for her and we had to cancel that but otherwise, it was pretty much a non-issue in that she was able to ride everything she wanted to and we had a fun trip. She had a waterproof cover that she put over the cast for showering and she also wore it on Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids.

By the way, the characters made a big deal over the cast. For example, Pooh "kissed" her boo boo at the Crystal Palace breakfast and the characters were willing to sign the cast.
