OK our British friends, please explain why this was bad 'cause it seems foolish.

The British press is having a fit but the stories I saw said the Queen was honestly taken with Michelle and put her arm around her shoulders on her own.

I thought the Queen was adorable standing there between Barack and Michelle - so tiny!!

Didn't the queen look tiny? How tall is she?

 I miss these threads.:rotfl:

Oops, I hope this isn't viewed as political. I don't think it has anything to do with who did it (REP vs DEM) but more as to why it is an issue (British customs).

It really wasn't a protocol breach, because the Queen touched Mrs. Obama first. It was just a bit of a shock, because Her Majesty hasn't done anything like that that in a public appearance in over 30 years.

You don't ever touch the Queen first without invitation -- THAT would be a protocol breach.

Queen Elizabeth is 5'4", though it's probable that she has shrunk a bit in recent years.

And then the Queen asked Mrs. Obama to "keep in touch." How sweet is that? The Obama's seemed to have made a good impression on her and others at this weeks events. Great to see. :thumbsup2

Why isn't there a rule people can't touch the First Lady? ;)

Wow that's crazy, my family is full of royal watchers (my late grandmother had a subscription to Majesty magazine) and I've never seen her do anything beyond shake hands. Even Prince Charles has said he didn't get much affection from her as a child, she must have REALLY liked Michelle.

Wouldn't it be fun if the Queen invited the family over during the summer and we got to see pictures of the girls watching the Guard change, etc.?

I hope we will still be able talk about these kinds of things, despite the political thread ban. These are the kind of warm, human things that transcend politics.

Right now, it's kind of human interest. I think it's okay to talk about the Queen. When it becomes bashing, that the thread is likely to get locked.

Ya hopefully it doesn't get to bashing. I don't think it would have mattered WHO it was, it's more that the queen actually liked somebody :rotfl:

Did anyone else see the photo shoot with Annie Lebowitz? The queen looked so annoyed when she wanted her to take off the crown. If royal looks could kill......

Wow, is the Queen really 5'4"? Because I am, too, but I feel a lot taller than the Queen looked!!

Well, in fairness, the Queen did say it took like an hour or more for her hairdresser to perch the crown on her head. She didn't want "crown hair" if she took off the crown. Plus, she wasn't sure if AL was going to make her put it back on again.

I would have been annoyed too...she's the QUEEN! I think it was a bit rude of Annie to do that. I mean everyone knows she's the queen but come on...you just don't tell or request the queen to take off her crown!

Is that like you "don't step on Superman's cape"?

Why must US dignitaries always bow down and follow everyone elses protocols?
