DD5's first karate competition was today. She won first place in one class, but forgot her moves for the second class. Instead of prompting her on the set of moves she knew, the judges prompted her on something she'd never seen before. She did it, but did not place in the top 3.

Immediately, I started to get up and protest. Then, I thought she should have the ability to do it over. Then, I almost told her it wasn't her fault, it was the judges. Luckily, I caught myself, and just congratulated her on the great job and for sticking with karate and praising all the hard work and practice she did leading up to the competition. I just can't believe I got as caught up in the competition as I did. I never wanted to be one of THOSE parents.

DD was a little upset for forgetting her moves (knew them again as soon as we left the ring), but is over the moon about her 3' purple trophy, so all is well and she LOVES karate. She's just sitting here, staring at it.

Good for you for catching yourself!!!!

I know it's hard, but they have to learn disappointment etc. early, with the little things, so they are better able to cope with the big things.

If that is your worst parenting mistake, your kids will be very, very lucky!:)

.

Same thing happened to my daughter....when she was a tiny tiger an instructor stands up with them and does the moves with them as they do it...well one tournament the instructor is doing a totally different form than the one my duaghter knew...she was SO confused and to shy to say "hey thats not my form" so she muddled through it copying him even though she knew the right form all by herself....I didn't say anything there but in the car I told her I knew what happend and not to worry about it. Every kid got a trophy anyway so she was ok with it...last week she was competing and actually came in first place in sparring, I was SO shocked because that is her least favorite part of the whole thing!

Congratulations to your DD!!! She won't always place in the top 3, but when she does, she'll feel great :cheer2:

Just a word of warning to you though... In our karate schools, if a parent or student protests at a tournament, they get completely disqualified!!! Actually, that is a big word of warning :lmao:

Now, my DS just came home from sparring a 3rd degree black belt who is twice as big as he & I think he may have broken his leg... don't ask :( He's only a first degree about 4'10", so it wasn't a fair fight :( He was looking at locking up State Champ in Sparring at the end of the month & now this might have just nailed the coffin shut on that.... darn it....
