OMG!!! I just got an EXCITING offer!!!!! *TRIP REPORT & pics p 4!*

OMG!!!!! I am so jealous! You will be meeting and staying with the legendary WALLY BOAG! That is awesome!

For those of you who do not know who Wally Boag is, please check out this video...

You are truly lucky. Please bring back pics and stories. I'm sure he has a lot to tell.

I have such fond memories of racing in the morning after getting in DL to go and make sure we had our reservations at the Golden Horseshoe. It was my Grandparents favorite thing to do in the park. I think its an amazing opportunity for you. I can't wait to here some of the tales you can pass on to us. Have fun!

Don't be torn - Wally Boag is a living treasure - spend the time you can with him. I have that book and it's lovely - really sweet and funny. I'd give up Fantasmic in a second -- it's going to be around for many years. I hope Wally will be too, but your opportunity to spend time with him may not be.

I had the pleasure of meeting him at a Tiki Room celebration, and then again at the 1313 Club's Golden Horseshoe party about 2 years ago - which was basically in his honor. He still tells great stories.

Ask him about Julie Andrews! He worked with her in London when she was just a little girl ( it's in the book too )
Walt LOVED Wally's act.

OMG Wally Boag!?! I didn't know he was still alive. :rolleyes1
What an exciting opportunity! I can't wait to hear about your stories w/ him & his fam. I wish my friends were cool & were related to someone famous. lol.
My dance teacher was one of the original can-can dancers that performed w/ him @ the GH. She said that he could always make the crowd laugh, even w/ corny jokes. :goodvibes
There was a pic of the orig. cast (Wally, Betty, & 4 can-can dancers [including my teacher]) w/ some other GH pics @ the D23 Expo, & it was sooooo expensive!

Wow! That is just fantastic. I would just be SO excited! I am excited for you! All the questions for that man! I hope you have an amazing time spent with him and his family.

That is very exciting! Have fun! I bet the stories are just amazing. The book looks cool too.

this is way over cool and only the disboards can appreciate this!! If you can take pics we all would love to see..

Not to hijack he post i wanted to share a sorta similar story.
I was talking to my co worker about the new Disney Museum in SF. and she says to me ooh im having dinner tonight with my friends who are animators who came up here for the Museum this week.I asked really who is it??

Floyd Norman and his wife. I almost passed out... What I wouldn't give to be in his presence..

Thanks so much to all! No one else finds this to be a big deal. I'm so glad I have the DISers to share it with.

Loved hearing the stories posted and thanks to disneynerd for the video link. Have you seen the one where he dances? The guy could turn himself into a pretzel. lcasa, how lucky you got to be there at the Golden Horseshoe party!! Wasn't it funny when Laurence shared those stories about how his dad told him there was a screw in his belly button and if he turned it the wrong way, his rear end would fall off (etc)?! pycees, your coworker is so lucky!! Maybe she'll invite you along!

Now I need your help. What to do? I looked into changing my flight from Sat night to Sun. Too $$$$. So if I want to stay at their house, it will need to be Fri night and I'll give up Fantasmic dessert seating for dd and me (believe it or not, I've never seen it!). Ok, it's more than a fair trade-off, but now I have to figure out the following:

How do I get from DLR to Santa Monica Friday and then Santa Monica to SNA on Sat evening? I looked into car rentals but I have never done that before and the prices I'm getting are way out of my range ($250-300 for our whole stay, Oct 22-24). I just don't have that much extra right now. Maybe we could take a shuttle to SNA on Friday afternoon and then rent a car? I think it would count as 2 days since we probably couldn't return it within 24 hours. Unfortunately, Laurence can't come pick us up since he's the sole caregiver for his parents at that time and it wouldn't be safe to leave them alone for so long. If we were going in/out of LAX he could, but I looked into switching airports and that didn't work without a big cost, either.

Are there options I'm not considering? We thought of driving down instead of flying, but dd has to go to work at 3 AM Sun so we would actually have less time to spend with the Boags and I don't think it would be worth it when you factor in gas cost and time lost.

We thought maybe we could just go visit on Sat and spend the day with them, and try to go back in Dec. for a longer visit, but...well...you just never know whether these things will work out again.

I've also been searching for a reasonable car rental for next week, and I'm having a hard time!

But I think this is a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Can you cancel your outgoing flights (maybe use them for a certain Diva trip in Feb?) and rent a car from home. Use it during your stay to visit the Boags, go to DLR, etc and then drop if off at the airport and fly home?

Oh, BillyFan, that's a GREAT idea! I'll check that out and see if it would work!!! :thumbsup2

What a wonderful opportunity to visit with Wally Boag & his family! I grew up going to Disneyland 1-3 times a year until we started getting our annual passes. Everytime we went to Disneyland in the 60's and 70's we HAD to go to the Golden Horseshoe and watch the show. I remember their act fondly, & still miss it. I agree with everyone who says that a visit with that family trumps a visit to Fantasmic. Fantasmic will be around for awhile. This visit is special.

Also, thanks for all the links, everyone. I enjoyed them all

I've had the best luck on car rentals from Costco. Also Hotwire can have good rates - they don't tell you the rental agency, but when I rented it was Hertz - and the site says they only deal with the major ones.

You may be able to get close enough to get picked up using Metrolink - I think you could take the Anaheim transit (art) to the Anaheim Stadium transit center, then a train to Union station, then the metro purple line to wilshire/western.

Use google maps, select directions from disneyland to santa monica, and choose public transportation. But it looks like over 2 hrs.

Or you could just invite me along and I'll drive!:goodvibes

And the belly-button story was very funny!

The video of the Golden Horseshoe event is available from apepenpublishing if anyone is interested. It was great fun.

OMG DIZ! SOOO excited for you! You know there are also Entertainment discounts for rental cars.
Told DH you have this opportunity and he is very excited for you too! He still can't get over us meeting on the tour last year!! :rotfl2:
Have fun!!

DIVAS and anyone else at DLR this coming weekend (10/22-25):

I have the most exciting news for you!!! I was trying to figure out how to get from DLR to Santa Monica on Fri and then from SM to SNA on Sat. Mary Jo SO kindly offered us a ride each way!! She refused any kind of payment, but mentioned that she has the book and so we thought maybe Wally could sign it for her.

So....I just talked to Laurence and he said any of the Divas/people who have posted here who want to ARE WELCOME TO COME OVER WITH ME AND MEET WALLY AND HAVE THEIR BOOK SIGNED!!!!!! He said his dad would be thrilled to see some fans, although do keep in mind that he is quite elderly. We'll have to figure out how to get together and drive over. It will take more than Mary Jo's car unless there is only 1 other person interested.

I also have a reservation for Fri night at Hojo's that I won't need. It's a doubles room @ $59 if anyone is interested.

Oh, and if you don't have a book, he has copies at the house.

Holy Moly! I'm PMing you right now!

Hi! I'll answer your PMs right away!

Just wanted to let everyone know that as of now, we have Mary Jo (mod extraordinaire!) giving dd and me a ride to the Boag's house on Friday afternoon. She will be returning to the resort afterward. She has room for 2 more in her car and I've heard from 4 people who are interested. I will try to figure out who wants to go for sure and whether or not there is anyone else who has a car and would like to come along.

That is so nice of you Diz to share this opportunity with your fellow disney fans. I hope you all have a wonderful time!
