It's true I signed up for the Mickey Marathon for January 2009. :scared1:

Never done anything like this before! :thumbsup2 Couldn't believe how fast things were filling up so I made my decision on the spot with my DH encouraging me and registered! Now I have almost a year to train (and save the money ;) )

I'll be 40 in 2009 and this was a way to kick myself in the a$$ and make a committment and do something monumental before I turn the dreaded Big 4-0.
Actually I hope after I accomplish this the big 4-0 will be no big deal. :)

Looking forward to getting to know you all and getting inspired and motivate by you too!

Way to Go! :cool1: You have taken a very important step, and we will be here to support you through your training. :thumbsup2 You can do it! Please join us on the weekly thread and share your training throughout the year.

Welcome Princess! You will be great - I did the same thing for my 45th birthday :cake: !

I used John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield's "Marathoning for Mortals" as my training guide. John's writing is funny and inspiring. Coach Jenny's plans and training tips are wonderful!

Don't know where you live, but in many communities that have marathons, you can find races in longer distances as folks prep for that marathon. That is a fun way to try some of the long distances.

I personally love the 1/2 marathon distance and would advocate trying to do one of those this summer. "Mortals" has plans for training for both the full and 1/2 marathon distance.

Good Luck and keep posting.

Congratulations on your decision. Your still a youngster yet, your best years are yet to come.

Is it a book? I don't have a training plan mapped out yet. I've looked on line etc. I'm running 5k now and know I have a long way to build. There is a local running club in town (but their shortest "long" run is 8k right now). We also have a local running store that I've attended for a few clinics in the past.

I live in Ontario near Toronto and plan to do a half in Sept or Oct 2008.

I think that exactly what I'll need. A place to go to help get (stay) motivated and learn whatthe heck I'm doing ???!!!! :)

Yes, "Marathoning for Mortals" is a book. A very easy and enjoyable read. You should be able to get it at any major bookstore.

FYI - Looks like John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield may be going to be at the expo for the Toronto Marathon weekend of Sept 26-28. Both are great speakers and well worth the time. The Toronto Marathon website will have all kinds of Expo schedule info posted as it gets settled.

Even if you don't run in any of the events for the weekend, GO TO THE EXPO!!! Expos are free and you can hear some great speakers, pick up info on shoes, training, health, etc. Last year my sister and I drove to the Cleveland marathon expo just to hear the speakers - about 2 1/2 hours each way, but a fun "road trip" day. I even found my fav shoes on a closeout clearance rack at that Expo and saved 50% :yay:

Congratulations! You're going to have a blast walking/running with this group....you are now one of us! lol

Congratulations Princess Aurora!!! I think you've made a great decision!

Are you doing the Waterfront marathon or the Toronto marathon? I've been thinking of doing one of those myself - I'm not sure if it's too close to the Jan race though. I'll have to talk it over with my chiropractor. I'm hoping he'll have a better idea since he's working on my knee :goodvibes

Way to go! I ran my first marathon at 40 also. I picked Disney because I figure if I am going to torture myself, it might as well be at the happiest place on earth.

This group will get you through it and you' ll have fun while training too.

That's just it I'm not sure but it would only be the 1/2 as I thought I would use it to incorporate into my training. Depends on how well the training is going I guess? I was doing some reading and it looks like the Waterfront one is a little more flat and in Sept. I don't want to "do" Toronto 1/2 in Oct if technically it's too close to the full in Jan?

Congrats on your decision! I, too, am heading toward the big 4-0 next year and I signed up for the 1/2! We are gonna be 40 and Fabulous! :goodvibes

According to the schedule I have made for my training, the 1/2 mileage would kick in sometime around Oct 26th. This might help with your decision about which would work for integrating into your training.

Congratulations! You can do it!

:cheer2:
