olympus evolt e-500

i was looking around and came across this offer the e-500 with two lenses on is a 14-45mm as well as a 40-150mm the package would be the same price as the nikon d40 with only a 18-55mm lense the question is which is a better option i know that the d40 is limited in lenses right now but that will change in the future i am sure

I am only aware of one person here that uses the Olympus, she loves it. My issue with it is it has a smaller sensor than the the other brands.

Keep in mind that the Oly uses a somewhat smaller sensor (4/3 system) and low light performance is not as good, as a result. Still, if it fits your needs, it seems to be a good bang-for-buck.

thanks for the answers but i am looking for a camera that will do night shots as well as fireworks so between these two the better would be the nikon then i take it , and then try to find a lense that will roughly cover the 18-150mm field at sometime in the future but will the kit lense do fireworks and night shots ok and guesses i will just not be able to take real long range zooms with the kit 18-55?

That depends on what type of night shots you looking for. For fireworks the kit will be fine, for long exposure shots, such as the castle or the hat, it will work great, for shots of something like spectro it will struggle, but the bright side of both nikon or canon would be the 50mm f/1.8 that is right around a hundred or less (no AF on d40) it gives you a pretty good low light lens at a very cheap price.

Take a look at this. For really low light stuff, you can add a 50mm f/1.8 for another $125 or so. but the 50mm will not autofocus with the D40, a real shortcoming of the D40, in the opinion of many, myself included.

Thanks am not exactly looking for long distance shots i.e safari pics or long distance outside shots so was hoping that the starter kit lense would be enough for me to get my feet in the door then to look at lenses as I get more comfortable with the camera in the future

It will work fine, I spent 5 days at WDW and used my kit for 99% of my shots, it was a great learning experience, and really showed me what I needed to get in the way of lenses to capture the shots I wanted to be able to take.

No worries, Nikon makes a great camera. You have to get the camera that fits your needs, and that you like, and the only one that has to be happy with your decision is you (and perhaps the wife or husband)

i have the evolt 500. i have not used yet at WDW, that will be in July but have taken 7000 on it.

Pics come out clear. Night time and fireworks i have not really done yet.

I have the 2 lens kit and it is a very good camera. I took it to Disney in Oct and used the 14-45 most of the time. I didn't take shots of Spectro, my daughter was on my shoulders. It does what I need it to do.
