olympics!

It doesn't snow in Vancouver? That's interesting. I always imagined it would have a similar climate to Alaska and Washington/Oregon, but then I also don't know if it really snows in those two states either. I know it does in Alaska (obviously). Idk, I've always wanted to go to Vancouver because I think the Pacific Northwest is probably a beautiful place to visit.

I know that their having a lot of troubles right now because their tempatures have been in the 40's this year and that's it. They had to bring-in Snow to help out with some of the down hill sports.

Kind OT: but I cried. http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/va...old-father-he-was-terrified-of?urn=oly,219592

This whole luge death thing has hit me really really hard, and I don't know why. :(

Me too! I think i'm just so sad that he made it all the way to the Olympics and he never made it to the Opening Ceremonies... its just so sad:(

I, thankfully, didn't see the video, and I didn't see the pictures - until today. :sad2: They made me sick to my stomach. Whether it was a track discrepancy and driver misjudgement, it shouldn't have happened.

1) This track had a history of crashes. Armin Zoeggeler, who is like BEAST, crashed days before.
2) He'd only run the track 25 times. His Canadian counterparts had run it at least 25 times. He's from a small country with no access to the worlds fastest track or anything like it.

I think the whole home advantage thing is ridiculous. If we, as a world, are coming together to compete, we should all have fair chances. If that means not practicing at the venue before the Games, so be it. If it means allowing other nations to go practice at the venue, so be it.

The track is not to blame for the accident. Luge comes with many risks, and one of them is the fact that humans make mistakes, and on a luge track at high speeds it is very difficult to correct them.

I had a heart attack last night when one of the atheletes fell of his sled.

It seems as though, nothing will go right with these Olympics. A death, hydraulic problems at the opening, bad weather (I believe a form of skiing was postponed?), and earlier the zamboni started leaking water on the speed skating ice.

I watched moguls last night, and I'm kind of disappointed Jenn Heil didn't get it. I mean I will admit that Kearney was better, it's just kind of sucky we don't have a gold medal yet. And we've never won one on home soil, so the pressure is kind of on.
I felt bad for Richards, falling and losing her ski... that was awful.

I think the luge track is part of the issue. Looking at where he crashed, there was maybe a foot of track to keep him in. Coming off that sharp turn, it would have been very easily to fly out because of the poor 1 foot high barrier. What dingaling thought that barrier was a good idea? Even if an injury there hadn't happened, you just don't take chances. Athletes aren't supposed to DIE during their sport. Injured? Yeah, but not killed.

Then again, I want to know what dingaling came up with the idea of luge or skeleton. I mean, seriously, flinging people on a sled head first or feet first down an icy, 1000 ft track with nothing but a helmet until they reach 100 mph?

BIL-O-DEAU BIL-O-DEAU!!!!!!!!!!!~!!

I'm glad he won too. It's nice when home countries win the Gold.

I dont think they expected the sport to go to that far of an extreme...but going 90 MPH and flying through the air like a rag doll I dont think that wall would have done much...like he could have hit it and landed on his head...it wouldnt have been a good crach either way.

Yeah but they knew these lugers were reaching those high speeds. Those speeds had never been reached before because it's the world's fastest track. Simple science and common sense would tell you that one wrong move on any of those curves, especially curve 16, and there's the possibility the luger would fly off the track. It would have been better to err on the side of caution, especially since the curve was notorious for producing accidents. And with the wall in place, it could have provided an area for him to deflect off. He may have been hurt just as badly as he would've if he flew off the track, or he may not.

Yeah, the track style may have been safe in other venues, but this is different. In those other venues, they weren't flying around that corner at 90mph. (Several lugers clocked in at 145 km/h according to the ticker on that curve. And they started 2 curves lower at the women's start.)

I just really think the IOC or whoever built the track really dropped the ball on this one. I just think this was an absolutely tragic, unnecessary death.

AND YAY FOR BILODEAUUUU!!!

I meant the people who invented luging and skeleton...but yeah there is so much science out there but one thing is they want to push these athletes to their limits. Its like an type of extreme sport.

Ohh. And I've actually heard it's a relatively safe sport. I mean yeah people get injured, but people get injured in every sport. But apparently, this was the first luging death since 1975.

I actually didn't know skeleton was a sport until yesterday. I pay attention to the skating, luging, skiing, and bobsledding events usually, but I found out about skeleton yesterday. I was like "Are you kidding me? We do this stuff all the time in my backyard!". I could've been an Olympian if only I'd known. :sad2: :rotfl:

Today has been an amazing day here in Vancouver 2010 we were unable to get any tickets to any other events and now the event we were supposed to go to today and been post ponned till Thursday and we leave on Wednesday were kind of screwed... But were going to the luge tommorrow and that will be fun today I saw Joe bidden down in whistler that was amazing also we went to the victory ceremony and got to see tons of athletes get there medals and Estelle was there performing it was amazing:)

Well I was born in Canada, but lived in Michigan most of my life, so I'm rooting for both (: Obviously since I figure skate, I'm excited for that. Yeah, I seen the clip on that horrible accident of the Georgian participant...grewsome. Ugh, I felt so bad about that. I'm also excited for the snowboarding. And wow, I realized that Curling is intense.... xD

Ok just in response to some peoples comments Vancouver is located 3 hours north of Seattle it rarely ever snows here... Maybe once a year if lucky and only a few inches with a exception of last year where they got 2 and a half feet... The weather is very similiar to Seattle with very little snow and mostly rain also seattle and vancouver are having here warmest winters ever and so the weather is actually quite nice... I was down there today for a hockey game and it must of been in the mid 50's farenheit also the luge I went to the womans last night and there going so fast I mean like the tv doesn't do it justice this track is insane but he georgian was a horrific accident amd should
of happened I was standing right next to the turn where he died and it just doesn't seem to add up from looking at the turn a Romanian last nigh made a mistake and instead just turned into a human luge sled that's what should of happened.. She skidded half down the track till stopping where I was standing (right by where the georgian)and was just ok that's what should of happened I don't know how to explain it but it was just a horrific accident there going so fast it's insane..

wahoo!! We got 2 gold now and 2 silver and 1 bronze!! i love watching the Olympics! :)

Haha I was right by Canada hockey place right when you one last night(actually walking to it to see the Russia vs. Latvia game right after Canada vs. Sweeden) and it was insane there was this red truck with Canadian flags driving across town hocking it's horn screening Canada there were people running down the street with Canadian flags screaming Canada there must of been 100's of them and once we got through security canadians were still coming out of the venue so we had to wait with thousands of others and people were standing on the over pass thing with flags waving them running up and down the thing with horns drunk it was insane I'm scared to know what will happen if you win gold lol :)
