We are staying on "Old Twon" San Diego before going to DL. I always wanted to try authentic Mexican food, and the one or two places I read about are chain restauranrs ( Acapulco and I can't remember the other).

I always found chain restaurants to be o.k., but not the home cooking of that ethneticity.

Is there any good privately owned mexican restaurants in the Old town area anyone can recommend ?

Thanks

:)

Old Town Mexican Cafe is my favorite Mexican food place in San Diego! You walk up and you see them cooking the tortilla's in the window. And the food is pretty authentic!

Well, not too sure about SD, but up near Disney, kinda where the 5 and 55 meet, there is Avila's El Ranchito. My family (mexican background) LOVE eating here. It's still family owned, with a couple locations but very good food. They too have a little lady at the front hand making tortillas and have an excellent marg and tequila bar. But the food is really nice. All of it very authentic and tasty. I'd recommend that place. Probably 10-15 minutes from Disney. Check out their website....

I second that. Love their carnitas and those fresh tortillas are great ( and make great fresh chips too). Worth the wait - and there always is one.

Old Town? You MUST try Cafe Coyote! Muy delicioso! Their pineapple/chipotle margarita is to die for!

Can't go wrong with Cafe Coyote or Old Town Mexican Cafe. They are right next to one another. Seriously....you MUST have the carnitas and homemade tortillas at either one. To die for!!!!!!!!!
