Old Navy Debuts Gay Pride T-Shirts For It Gets Better

I love the idea of the shirts but wish they would've handled the promotion better...

Only 26 stores across the US will get the shirts- and apparently those stores are having issues even getting them. Apparently those stores who get them will do phone orders but who knows when they'll actually receive the merchandise to sell...

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but my guess is you won't see many posts against out of fear. It works both ways.
Nope. No fear. There's a huge difference between opinion and bias. Sure, I'm afraid of some things - but showing support for people being treated unfairly isn't one of 'em.

Agreed. Why do people believe that EVERYONE should be promoting or supporting? Why is that judging? I love Old Navy but I won't be buying that shirt for myself or daughter.
That's fine. I haven't even read your reasoning, and it doesn't matter. But your decision to not buy a particular item/line is VERY different from the other poster saying Old Navy won't be getting any of her money. Intended or not, that absolutely sounds like a total boycott based on a very few items.

I think the shirts are great. The fact that companies are capable of making and supporting an issue like this is wonderful. :goodvibes Only 10 or 15 years ago companies wouldn't have even supported anything like this for fear of a backlash.
True, but the lack of backlash doesn't mean that their aren't people out there that disagree. To me it's more frighting to have those who hate silenced. I'd rather know who hate me. Those people have been silenced out of fear of rejection- hahah the irony!

Yup, 26 out of 1,000+ stores. And even then, they seem to be MIA. Not one person has reported seeing these shirts in stores. :sad2:

Agreed. Why do people believe that EVERYONE should be promoting or supporting? Why is that judging? I love Old Navy but I won't be buying that shirt for myself or daughter. Doesn't mean I hate ANYONE! Wearing a shirt means nothing. All it is is a marketing tool to get people in their stores to buy clothing. They are jumping on the band wagon while it's hot which is smart. Not buying doesn't mean hating though.
There are so many other groups out there still struggling to be accepted and appreciated. Did people embrace the first black Princess as much as they will embrace these shirts, No. The tickets sales prove that! DO you buy your little girls different race baby dolls?

LOL!!! this has nothing to do with buying a shirt or not. It's the blatant proclamation that the poster will NEVER shop there again based on the fact that they are selling the shirt. I have no issue with someone not wanting to buy the shirt. But to exclaim that you will NEVER shop there again simply because they are selling the shirt is either ignorance or hate and I have no time for either.

As for your strange question I have no children but I certainly would have no issue whatsoever buying a white child a black or asian or native american doll. Why would I? That's just lunacy.

::yes::

"I'm not going to buy that shirt" is MUCH different than "they won't be getting any of my money."

That's right, you won't. You'll buy a 2012 shirt next year, and a 2013 shirt the next year, and a 2014 shirt the year after that... It's brilliant marketing as well as a great idea!

And hopefully one day we won't need them anymore...because people will finally realize that it's OK to love the person you want to love and not be judged by anyone else for it. :hippie:

Actually, yes I did.

LOL yah if you are like me you bought the disney princess doll set. SO lets see you got Mulan, frog prince whatever her name was, than ariel.. does she count as having legs? LOL well either way she couldn't talk for awhile and has no legs but HAD legs.. hmm. Oh wait it's Tiana?

Pfft! Hmmmm how to say what I want to say in a nice, friendly, Christian way.......I don't even know if there is a nice way to say what I'd like to say.............

How about this:

Well, you don't have to condone everything either. This poster doesn't believe in this, so she is electing to voice her opinion with her pocketbook. So. Everyone is free to do this.

NOt judging applies to everything, I see a lot of that here when it comes to other things, why doesn't this get a pass if this is how she feels.

I am not saying I agree or disagree, but don't bring Christian into this, because we can't go down that road.

Yes it is, I think many peoples problem with the LGBT community is that many still believe it is a choice. I too believe it is a choice but I don't care. If you want to place yourself in a box and say you are going to look for love in a small pool of people that is your choice. I feel in love with DH but that doesn't mean that I couldn't have fallen in love with a woman. It's about the personalty. I love who he is so I have a husband.

Back to the t shirts- the fact that they aren't available everywhere makes me want the shirt even less. It's a $$$ grab.

Like who? The Westboro Baptist Church? They get to spew their hate wherever they want. And I don't think anyone likes it too much.

The shirt is a positive message...it's a beautiful message. It supports a wonderful organization. If you don't like it don't like it, don't wear one. No one's forcing you.

Frankly, I've gotten so tired of people hating on the gay community that I'm perfectly fine with them feeling bad that a day might finally come when no one wants to listen to them anymore. Enough is enough.

Welp, not that it'll hurt them in any way shape or form, but old navy will never see any of my money again.

You're probably right about that. :)

I didn't. Mostly cause I didn't have a little girl. But, I got my son some.

Again, a portion of the proceeds go to the It Gets Better foundation.

Does Old Navy make money? Of course they do. No one is saying they don't. But it also supports an organization that I wholeheartedly support, so that's still OK with me.

And being gay is not a choice. I've had too many gay friends for far too long to believe that has ever been true.

I so agree with you on the choice thing. And the same with my gay friends, in fact more than one of them told me that no one would make a choice to live like this, they would have to be crazy because of all the hatred.

Yep -- we've got 3 black baby dolls & either 1 or 2 hispanic ones.

DD absolutely adores Tiana & quite frankly I don't know anyone that doesn't like her just as much as all the other princesses. :dunno:

Funny, somewhat off-topic story: we were in Lowe's shopping for a new washing machine when DD saw an Indian woman in the next aisle. We had just finished watching Pocahontas that day and DD was absolutely fascinated with this woman! She followed her up and down all the aisles, calling her Pocahontas! :rotfl: Thank god it was in 2yo-speak so no one but me could understand her! Still super cute though.

I made the same decision years ago solely on the politix-neutral basis of their craptacular quality. No hate.

also...love the word "welp"

I have friends who've just struggled and struggled with this with no one to go to. Almost no one to tell them it was OK to be who they are. They hadn't done anything wrong. When I see the It Gets Better stuff, I wish we had it 10 years ago when I watched them going through this.

I'm so glad it exists now...because they are better now, and it does get so much better.

You believe it's a choice but as a gay person, I can tell you it is not. I almost married a man because I was trying so hard to be straight. I'm just not attracted to men and I can't force myself to be.
