If you have your reciept you should get money back in my mind, and I will not shop there. And if I am shopping for others I make sure they can have a hassel free return if they have a reciept!
I've worked in retail and at my store a gift receipt is not considered an original receipt. If you returned something with a gift receipt you could only get store credit. If you have an original receipt you could receive your money back in the original form of payment (cash, charge, etc). This is fairly common in my experience as an employee as well as a consumer.
