You can go into MDE and check. I usually manage magic bands on my laptop but in the app check in the “hamburger” menu for “my profile” and you will find “magic bands and cards”. Tap that and you will find a section that lists your magic bands … all that you have used in the past. If they are “active” they should work. Most will work just fine for most things. It’s a good way to manage them … you can inactivated ones you have list along the way.
For short-range “tap” they will work regardless of age. Longer-range such as some ride photos may not, but lots of folks reporting 3+ years is still good.

This. Previous reports used to be that the battery would last about 2 years. More people are reporting 3 years+.
Just understand that if you are using it for ride photos, it may not work, but will for the room, charging, tapping into parks, etc.

I was just coming out to ask about charging...... so even if the battery is out, we can still charge meals using our band ? ( If I'm understanding you correctly) We have our bands from our covid cancelled trip from 2020, and we're going to use them in Sept..... it's nice not to have to buy more since we never got to use these

Nearly all functions of a MagicBand will continue to work for virtually forever. For functions like touch to pay (aka room charging), the MB will draw any necessary power from the touch point. The one feature that will stop working when the internal battery eventually dies is the automatic linking of ride photos.

perfect, thank you !!! We aren't worried at all about the ride photos, so if that's basically it, then I'm good sticking with the ones we have ! thank you !
We are planning our first trip back to WDW in January 2023. We have magic bands from 2019. since we don't get free ones anymore, can we still use these or are they dead?

Please read previous responses in this thread. As long as you have not deactivated it will work. You will want to have the Bluetooth function enabled on your phone for things like ride photos as long distance may not work with old MBs.
Some magic band functions require the battery to be working (i.e. ride photos) while most others do not. There is no way to check in MDE to see if the battery still works and the design is such that you can't change the battery.
