I have stayed at Old Key West before but I am not familiar with the layout. I want to request an area for next months stay, but I have no idea what I am doing.

I am a smoker, but I don't mind a non-smoking room...just as soon smoke outside anyway. But I want to have a nice area. Since we are going to have a car, I don't really care about being close to the main area (pool, ect...).

Anyone have any suggestions?

BTW, we are booked in a studio.

I know I am getting old when on my stay at Old Key West (We stayed 3rd floor - non-smoking room) while on the balcony someone was smoking below and the smoke rose to where I was and bothered me! That sort of thing never used to bother me.....

I always thought non-smoking buildings were NON SMOKING BUILDINGS. No smoking on balconys since they are part of the building. This would bother me a lot, since I am very allergic, and the smoke from someone on a lower balcony would drift into my unit if the doors or windows are open.

I have read on these boards before that CM's are saying it is ok for smokers to smoke on balconys. If CM's are doing this they are putting some of the folks with alergies at risk. I sure hope most smokers go outside on the sidewalks and such to smoke.

As a former smoker I'm not as tolerant as I wanted folks to be when I smoked. I feel badly about it but smoke really bothers me now. So I think you should ask for a smoking optional building. I request Turtle Pond Area because I like that pool area and DH likes to walk to DTD. On the whole I don't think there is a bad area at OKW. Have a great trip.

We had a smoker one time in the studio next to our 1 bedroom at OKW. He smoked outside his room on the porch by the parking lot (end unit, second floor). I really didn't mind because the smoke did not enter the room or interfere with our balcony use. I think that is more considerate than the balcony side.

Please, request a smoking optional building. Many people are sensative to smoke. Smoking on balconies is allowed as it is not in the unit. I also find it hard to believe that smoke can make it through 6 " of concrete or will just weft up to a balcony, but, people say it does, I have, however, never smelled anyone else's smoke. But, that is not to say it does not. There are really nice locations for smokers. Building 19,25 and 41 are really nice.

Not only is smoking allowed on non smoking building balconies, but many times CMs will tell guests they can smoke in a non smoking room and provide ash trays for them. I am NOT offering an opinion one way or the other on this, I am just stating the facts.
I agree with Gail, in that I find it very hard to believe that smoke makes it through 6" of concerte or drifts up to a balcony and I have also never smelled anyone's smoke, but that has just been my experiences.

What is the purpose of non smoking rooms if they allow people to smoke in them? That would explain why one trip we could not get rid of the smoke smell in our non-smoking unit. I called down and asked about it, and they said perhaps the previous occupant didn't obey the rules. For those of us who are VERY allergic to it, the smoke permeates the woodwork, and furniture, and that residue is what the allergic react to. The whole point behind non-smoking units is to have them be "not smoked in".

Well, I can confirm that smoke does travel. We just returned for 2 weeks at OKW and stayed in a 2 BR in Bldg. 62, bottom floor.
I requested nonsmoking, top floor...........

Aside from very loud people above us, they smoked. a few mornings, I had to go inside to enjoy my coffee!!!

So these people were above you? I am not doubting you but it is strange since smoke rises.

Smoke doesn't always rise! Have you ever been down wind of campfire? Smokers have a hard time smelling smoky
rooms. I know it wasn't until I quit smoking that I became aware of the lingering odor of smoke.

After I read the OP, I said to myself "Self, there won't be one post that has anything to do with the question the poster was asking. All people read was SMOKE"

Well, obviously I was wrong. Nick did post a map of OKW. I guess I don't know this board as well as I thought I did.
