Old Key West Resort

We have just paid depoist for OKW (Studio) for next September with free dining.
Those of you who have stayed there please pass on your highs & lows at this resort.

Hi there,

You have booked the biggest studios in the WDW inventory. We have stayed at this resort a number of times and always had a great time. The resort is vast and you can ask to choose which part you stay in. For a first timer depending if you a have a vehicle or not stay at the resort center called the hospitallity house which in Key West themed although it's nicer than the orginal town of Key West. The lows used to be the buses although in our last few trips this is much! improved the highs taking the free water lauch to Downtown Disney or having great family BBQ's at the Turtle Pond Pool area. The fast food shop called Good's To Go has some of the best chips in Disney.

Great place, big bedroom ask for a upper studio as some of the plants can stop the light getting into the ground floor rooms. We stayed in bldg 23 which was near the resort centre in July and had a great view of a water island golf green, I gave up counting how many balls went in the water.

We LOVE OKW! We're staying in a studio for the first time in just over 5 weeks time We've stayed in the one and two bedroom villas and the Grand Villa lots of times and we've never been disappointed. We love the laid back feel of the place. The villas are really spacious and from what I've read so are the studios. We've only been once without a car and we didn't have any problems with the buses but it's a lot more convenient for us if we have a car.

I would visit the DVC Planning board there's loads of info on there!

We found it too spread out, even with a car. Also, our studio was a bit run down, the air con was faulty and the internet stopped working.

I stayed there using my DVC points a couple of times and I absolutely love it.

To me it feels a lot like SSR (I know that probably doesn't help) but with a more "lived in, laid back" atmosphere.

The rooms are huge and I'd go back in a hreatbeat.

The only real downside is the transportation. Being a DTD resort, Disney transportation from there is a bit spottier than most so a rental car IMO is a must. I always get a rental car though so for me it's not an issue.

I agree with jen_uk & personally I wouldn't stay there again. Our studio was dirty & run down, the one onsite table service restaurant has a pretty limited menu & the counter service is literally that just a counter.

Saying that though the resort itself is pretty and very relaxing but it just didn't feel like Disney to me.

Our studio was spotless and a great size. I wouldn't do any Disney resort without a car but was only a short walk to bus stop if we wanted buses.
Didn't eat at OKW but only 3-4 min drive to POR or POFQ for 2 fantastic food courts.
We still can't decide if we are trying SSR next August or to stick with OKW which we know we like and bigger studio.

We stayed here in the Summer and loved it. We had a Studio on the upper floor and found it to be spotless. We had a car for the middle of our stay and used the buses when car-less. I guess we were lucky with the buses, as we never had to wait for one. Olivia's was a great place to eat in. Pools were good - we tended to use the smaller pools that are dotted about the site, but the main pool was good. The staff were all really friendly and couldn't do enough for us. We used Disney's Magical Express which worked really well for us too.

OKW is our home resort and we really love it. The resort is just beautiful and the studios are huge. We love staying in the Old Turtle Pond Road area. They have a great quiet pool there. It is huge and there is hardly ever anybody in it. The food at Olivia's is great even though the menu is a little limited. Their Key Lime Pie is out of this world.

Never been so my opinion means nothing (what's new!), the size of the resort would put me off slightly, theming I think in many ways it isn't supposed to 'feel like disney'. That's the whole point of the tropical theming.

Accomodation at some DVC resorts appears hit and miss - some get a nice room, whilst others get one in need of attention.

Personally I would want to be close to the hub of the resort, otherwise would feel a bit isolated, and would probably want to have a look around before I decided to stay there.

we loved OKW the 4 times we stayed there - each time for 2 or 3 weeks...

although we did stay in a 2 bedroom suite, so had a full kitchen...
but i think i would have liked it in a studio as well...

since we always have a car, we request one of the most secluded buildings, far from the hub...
but without a car, i would request one of the buildings close to the center (near the main bus stop and main pool)..

the staff at OKW is very friendly - and i just LOVE it when i drive up and the guard gives a little salute and cheery, "WELCOME HOME"....i love that..
i know...corny of me...
but it's really a lovely place to stay...of course, everyone is different in what they like...

We stayed there a couple of years ago and I really liked it, I think its nicely themed and the rooms are a good size. My wife wasn't so keen as she thought it was too spread out.

I'd agree that Olivia's is a nice place to eat, we ate there on our last day.

The only problem I remember was that Bell Services seemed to be overstretched. We phoned really early in the morning for someone to pick up our bags but they couldn't pick them up until after lunch, which would have been too late for our Magical Express back to the airport, so I ended up having to lug our cases to one of the bus stops and take them on the bus, which didn't please the driver.
