Old Key West questions

We'll be at Old Key West in Nov. Have toured this resort before but never stayed there. Am wondering what all you can buy at Conch Flats General Store. Will we be able to buy breakfast items like cereal, bread, eggs and milk. Or would we be better off to get a town car from the airport and make a grocery stop somewhere? Also wondering what supplies are in the resorts. We'll be in a two bedrooms suite. Thanks.

You can buy that stuff at Conch Flats BUT it will be a lot cheaper to get it at a grocery store. You pay a premium for purchasing there.

you can get those items - just depends - if you only want a few then go with their general store.

however if you are planning on eating more of your meals at the resort in your villa - then I would go with

www.wegoshop.com

or

www.gardengrocer.com

but if you only a few things - the general store at OKW is fine.

There are also several companies that will deliver your grocery order to your villa. We have stayed at the BCV a few times, and at the Poly and I have used wegoshop.com. I have been very pleased with there service.
You have a choice of several different stores they will shop at for you. You place your order, indicate if you will accept substitutions or not, and they shop for you. You pay the cost of your order plus a delivery fee. I think the delivery fee was $11 2 years ago. We definitely saved that amount over shopping at the resort store.
We ordered juice, water, soda, beer, wine, breakfast foods, snacks etc.
You schedule your delivery and they guarantee a 1/2hour window.
We were very pleased
Hope this helps.

I'd think about having a car. Old Key West is very car friendly and while a lot of people swear by Disney Transport, we just like being able to park right outside our door and go shopping or to dinner at another resort whenever we want.

renting a car at Disney seems to be a big waste of money. Now I generally drive from home - so I have my car.

but with DME and WDW transportation - a car is not that necessary.

OKW transportation has improved greatly in the last 5 years.

of course I only do my outlet mall shopping when I drive....

I agree about a car, we go to Publix or Winn Dixie and save a ton on having groceries and snacks in our room. I always find very cheap car rentals in Orlando so it's totally worth it to me. I also can't stand staying on site without a car and trying to go between resorts, the transportation at WDW is terrible for that! I like the flexibility of a car for sure. I think it would be cheaper than a car service with grocery stop depending upon how long you'll be there, and if you are in a building at OKW that is far from the main building you'll be really glad you had a car.

i think there are pros and cons to each alternative suggested above. If you have a big family (we have 6) renting a vehicle large enough isn't cost prohibitive when compared with the free transport from the airport and on site, so we download the DVC grocery order form and fax it down for our order. We've been the happiest with the in resort and on site transportation provided at OKW. Since DD is just a boatride away, getting to other resorts really shouldn't be an issue because resort busses come there frequently.

You also have to consider whether or not you will have the DDP and how many meals you are planning to eat in the room.

The grocery delivery deals offer you both a cost saving option versus the purchases at the OKW store or having a rental or town car stop from the airport.

Good luck with your decision. I don't think anyone can tell you which is best bec/there are so many personal variables to consider with all the available options.

Liquor prices are really expensive there, like $15 for a six pack. But we did use them pretty much for all our shopping, because we just didn't feel like leaving, and we didn't shop before we got there. We weren't coming straight from home, so we couldn't bring the home stuff we normally did.

It did mean that we shopped VERY frugally, and had very little to take back to South Florida with us.
