You're right, Epcot side is not guaranteed. In fact, the last I knew you can't even request it in those words. My guess is because people were disappointed that only a relatively small number of rooms see SE or that the view of Epcot is really a "backside" view for the most part.

But if your friends faced the road, they were also facing the back of Epcot and should have been able to see at least the top of Illuminations. We like that side because it seems so peaceful and private. Of course, you do have to ignore that road!
