Old family remedies...got any?

Lord, my Nanny ( my Father's Mother) believed in Vick's Salve for EVERYTHING. She not only rubbed it on any hurt from a cold to a bruise, she ATE a little for a sore throat

LOL DH he thought that you were suppose to take Vick's by mouth. His mom always gave them a spoonful when they were congested. I freaked when he tried to get DS to eat some. I've spent a lot of my marriage saying "read the label, do not do as your mom (stepdad, cousin etc) did"

Go to your spice section at your local grocery store, I bought mine at the Walmart in Orlando to bring back here to the UK, but powered Alum which is used in making pickles. Just dampen your finger and dip it into the jar and just a dab of it on the sore, with in a day it will heal the sore, if it's to deep in the mouth just take a cup of warm water and a quarter teaspoon and mix well and gargle, it tastes awful but it really works wonders. When I was a child my mom had it in rock form and she would chip off a piece and I had to suck on it until it was melted, thank god they started to make it in powder form

I debated whether or not to post this, but maybe we aren't the only ones...

My grandmother used urine for ear aches! My mom would have to catch it in a cup and then my grandma would put a drop in her ear. :confused3 Yuck! And I am thinking that it does not work because my mom and aunt have hearing loss due to chronic ear infections as children!

For an ant bite (or any other bug bite that ended up with a big, pus-y, blistery head) my grandmother would first apply a wash cloth that had been soaked in hot water. She would have us hold that on the bite until it cooled down and then she would pierce the bite with a sewing needle or sharp pin. Then she would put the washcloth back in hot water and have us reapply that to the bite. Once it had cooled again, we were to pat the area dry and apply Bactine as well as a bandaid. The bite would be gone in a day or so and I've done that with DS tons of times because he seems to have a penchant for stepping barefooted into ant beds.

Sounds gross indeed, but, I guess anything is possible!

After all, isn't the HRT 'Premarin' drug used by menopausal women made from pregnant horse urine??

For spider bites, peel a potato till you have starch and then put it to the spider bite.

My DH's grandmother did this also!!

This is something that a I have learned from an older person but not family.

If you feel a headache or migraine coming on take, ben-gay/icyhot/flex-all type of white lotion and massage and rub into your neck. all the wal up to the part underneath the skull (does that make sense?) you will be amazed at how much this relieves them.

The stuff that is in those products opens up the capillaries so the blood can flow again. Can also use of the temples/forehead. . . .

My Mom's oncologist (who like her, is also a breast cancer survivor :) ) drinks water all day with a TBSP of vinegar as antioxident, as does her aunt who swears by it at the age of 90!!
Apple Cider vinegar is sold in health food stores, so it must be good for you. My husband takes it every day mixed with honey. He was told it would help his lower back pain. Seems like vinegar is good for a lot of things! :)

For stomachaches...lie on your stomach.

I take brandy for a cough, or even when I don't have a cough, lol!

I think the same stuff is in that Head-On "apply directly to the forehead!" thing!

Wow, thanks-I'm gonna try this. Alot of my headaches are due to tension and this sounds like it might help.

You are too cute...LOL

I saw a urine thing on one of the morning talks shows a few years ago ...I think it was with Diane Sawyer, and the guest said that ones own urine is an acne treatment.

I am having a hard time swallowing urine treatments. I don't think that I could do it.

cough: our mom gave us a spoonful of turpentine(yes, paint thinner) with a little sugar. cant remember if it worked or not

Vicks salve: good for an earache(a little on a a cotton ball stuffed in the ear) as well as congestion. I actually use this on my kids and on me. the stuff is a miracle.

As a child, I always got warm tea with honey and a few drops of whiskey in it when I had an annoying cough of any kind. I remember part of the deal was watching TV on the couch while I drank it, and then crashing until the next morning.

I don't know if it worked for the cough, but it shut me up nonetheless!

I don't think this works on adults, though...

your welcomed, I was surprised at how well this works :thumbsup2

the person that showed me has been to a neurosurgeon and has had over 20 shots done, and this dr where we live now told her to do this. And that was 10 years ago, she has had no more shots, and only took meds once. Let me know how it works for you :)
