Old Disney Park photos

....had I seen that pic elsewhere, I would have NEVER guessed it to be WDW! Looks so 'World's Fair'-like....

It looks like the entrance into a outdoor shopping mall. Never would guess that was tomorrow land

That would be the ORIGINAL version of the Tomorrowland at the MK that lasted until the big "Future that never was" makeover in the mid 90's (94?). When the park first opened, there was actually a waterfall down from the spires into the lagoon. It didn't last long however due to the spray which wet and caused issues on the bridge from the hub. If I recall correctly, Later on after the water was shut off, they added some mosaic work and other decorations to the slopes to spruce things up. (I think the idea at first was that the sloping walls from the roof into the lagoon area painted blue almost looked like a waterfall on it's own.)

Interesting enough, here's a picture from Tokyo Disneyland (which took a lot of it's original designs from WDW's MK) on the bridge from their hub.

(Yup.... I know WAY too much Disney trivia. lol)

I think if I recall what i've read correctly, EPCOT originally had some characters at the World Showcase that were simply there to represent the country/region you were in.

As for the lack of trees around the Fountain, Prior to the '94 redo of Futureworld and the Communicores, EPCOT had a much more open/airy feel to it. Much of the light within the Communicores came from the floor to ceiling windows and some skylights. There were also numerous bridges you walked over as the fountain water flowed much closer (and around) the buildings with several ponds.

When they converted the Communicores into the Innoventions buildings, They paved over many of the ponds to widen the walkways and create more areas for plants to grow. They also painted the windows and skylights black to make the interior of the buildings much darker, and allowed the trees and plants outside the building to fill in to hide the windows which were now painted black. (There were also some props like a dragon placed behind some of the trees by the fountain for the short-lived stage show that was done on the stage they built over a portion of the fountain). You can still get a slight feel for the original interior Comunicore look in the hallway on the backside of Communicore West behind the Coolzone and Character Spot. [including the raised ceiling which was designed with the idea of potentially adding a Wedway Peoplemover style transportation system in Futureworld around the perimeter of the Communicores]

Yup.... DEFINITELY way too much Disney trivia.....

I liked Epcot better when it was more open and airy. It's still my favorite park, however, with Animal Kingdom as a close second.

Wow! That hat really does kill the view! This is much better!!!

This is from my first visit, Jan, 73, and Frontierland was still being built. This is the (empty) Rivers of America! Tom Sawyer's Island across the way. (View from the train.)

Yes, the Epcot characters around the World Showcase were really tall with huge heads and had costumes to represent the countries. I really miss them. They were a nice touch to enhance the countries.

Love the new, old photos, Cyndiella and ejud!!!

...off-topic, but I noticed that you live in Deal...what a NICE, lovely town; once in a while I used to drive through it on my way back from the shore....the big red church at the town limits used to crack me up though...:confused3 :teeth:

The big red church, St. Michael's, is actually part of the West End section of Long Branch, although they like to think they're in Deal LOL!!L. It's an interesting place to live. Our winter population is under 1,000 people. In the summer there are more than ten times that number. I can only dram of living in one of the big homes here, but our apart, ent is in a nice neighborhood which will empty out for the winter in about three weeks, leaving only four families on my entire blockL

Couldn't sleep so did some search, and given the paucity of images or information, I can easily believe that these characters were not very popular... :)

Here's what I found.

http://disneyshawn.blogspot.com/2011/04/no-foolin.html: "...the new park would feature a cast of characters all its own, from Dreamfinder and Figment in Future World to the People of the World in World Showcase. These oversize, doll-headed characters were adapted from America on Parade, which ran at the Magic Kingdom in the mid-70s."

WSCCharacters.jpg

And as a paranthetical on another page, I grab this excerpt: "...wander through the World Showcase extravaganza and see any one of these one hundred twenty dolls of various nationalities..."

OldEpcot2.jpg

Apparently, they wandered freely and so would be seen outside their "native lands" if they even had one in World Showcase, and looking closely at the image that started this discussion and the details of the costume, I would guess it as Mexican?
