OKW Worries

I am booked for a 1 BR Villa at Old Key West in October. This is my first WDW vacation since my Make-A-Wish at age 8, and I liked the theme and colors, plus I am severely disabled with muscular dystrophy, and it seems more accessible than other resorts. We cannot stay at a regular deluxe; my nurse travels with DH and me, so we must have a villa. The kitchen is needed for my IV feed supplies, and we need to be able to stay in without being cramped in case I have to take rest days.

I know it is not right next to the parks, but we will have a van, and like the idea of parking right outside our villa.

However, Allears had some postings about the resort being old and renovations being done. We must have the accessible room we booked, but what if it is NOT renovated? This is a MAJOR trip for us, and I can't stand the idea of a worn or dirty room/resort. We're going during the Food & Wine Fest, so rebooking would involve postponing the trip, and I have a poor prognosis. I can't waste the time. Other posters raved about it and said it was the most relaxing and homey of the deluxe villas.

How can I find out whether my room will be what was promised? I'm so anxious about this. I just want to have fun and stay someplace nice.
Help!:(

I happened to stay in a handicapped room at OKW in April.....it was not a remodeled room.

I thought the room was in VERY good condition.....shower could have used some new grout....but other than that.....I was very impressed.

Don't worry.....you'll have a great time....OKW is a really fun place.
Just sit back and enjoy....the planning, the trip...and your return memories:goodvibes

We got an upgrade to OKW last year and we just loved it. We stayed in a studio which hadn't been renovated but it was fine. All the CMs were so nice and the resort did have a very laid back homey feeling. The pictures of the 1 bedroom villas look great, I'm sure that you'll have a fabulous time there. I want to go back to OKW again but it isn't in the budget for this year

We stayed in an accessible room in May, and have stayed at OKW many times. The resort IS NOT run down. As I've learned recently, they only renovations taking place are the replacement of the matresses, pull out couch and the stove top.

Handicap parking spaces are plentiful, and are located outside each building.

The 1br has plently of room for our family of 4 (adults).

We stayed in a studio for 3 nights and then a 1BR for 2 nights. Holy Cow!!! I can see why people buy into DVC just for the benefit of staying in those 1BR's!!!

So much space! And we had a perfect view in our 1BR. It was a ground floor unit and we had a beautiful patio overlooking the river. So beautiful and peaceful watching the boats go by.

Run down??? Not in the least. I would have bought an OKW resale DVC right then and there were it not for my two young boys who need a college education!!

It was lovely and perfect. Enjoy your vacation!

OKW may be an older resort, but it is far from run down. We were just there two weeks ago and our villa was beautiful. They are doing renovations here and there which include replacing the mattresses, changing out the coiled burner stove top to a ceramic stove top, replacing the older sleeper sofa with a newer style, painting, etc. They look the same when we first stayed there over ten years ago. Beautiful.

You'll want to make sure you have either a handicapped accessible unit or are located in Bldg 62, 63 or 64 (these are the only units with elevators).

You will have loads of room to relax. The buses are excellent.
