We are currently staying at OKW. Before we left a very nice Sentinel reporter interviewed us about timeshares. The article was about the fact that hotel stays are down around 5% in the Orlando area and much of that is due to timeshare ownership. They felt this was bringing less money into the Orlando area. I told them we actually spend more money as we visit at least 2 times a year instead of once every other year. We always rent a car, fly into the airport and spend lots of money on food and Disney collectibles. The reporter asked if they could take a picture of us while we were here. They asked to come to OKW and so we spoke to the front desk as we didn't want to cause any problems. The front desk transferred me to someone in the "back" who then told me absolutely not to talk to this person and they would call and check it out to make sure they weren't misrepresenting themselves and were actually going to commit some kind of crime. I offered to call the reporter back and was told not to. We had a couple busy days and came back to a message from DVC Public Affairs. We spoke to her today and she said she got conflicting reports, one that we felt our safety was violated and the other that we wanted them to come out. She said we were free to have anyone out we wanted. At that point I was irritated that the front desk had misrepresented us, which I told he cast member. I felt bad so I left a message for the reporter who then called back. He returned my call and wanted to make sure everything was OK. The article is supposed to run on Sunday, so hopefully it turns out alright.
We have been members since 2000 and had at least 20 DVC stays and this is the first time I have had any complaints. When we arrived Sunday night, it was late and we were tired. They gave us a special needs room 3415 to be exact. Reuben at the front desk neglected to tell us this, so I wasn't too happy when we got to the room. We called the front desk who told us that we should have been informed and she apologized. They didn't have any other 1 bdrs but would move us in the AM. Next I went to get into the hot tub and it didn't work. By this time it was 11:30 and didn't want to mess with maintenance. We had a nice person call back and tell us we would be moved to a water view room in building 45. Of course we had to check out by 11:00 and couldn't get the new room until after 4:00, the usual drill. When we went back to the front desk to get our new keys, Millie was very short with us. We told her that we were changing room as we didn't want the special needs room and the hot tub didn't work. I told her we were called and the new room was in building 45. I would almost bet she didn't turn in the hot tub issue and then gave us our new keys and circled the area our new room was in but not building 45. I asked about this and told her I knew she couldn't tell us our actual room number but that we were told it was in 45 and she stuck to the area she circled. Of course when we came back to our new room it wasw 4521.
Now to the good stuff, the room is great as have our other 5 stays at OKW. We are BWV owners but have always loved OKW also. Have a great water view and the room is in great shape. The rest of the CMs we have encountered at OKW have been great. We did the meal plan for the first time. We do think it's a great deal but almost too much food for us. The parks have been moderately busy but not too much of a problem. Looking forward to another 13 nights in December.

what hotels are down 5% in the Orlando area?

Disney certainly isn't...

I tried for a last minute trip with a value resort and there are none to be had for the entire month on June...

if that was true I think there would be more bargin out there. there are a few but most in places that are going to do a rehab or are doing a rehab....

Actually, I'm curious as to how the reporter initially contacted you? It certaily would be a violation of privacy for the reporter to find out you were staying at DVC through Disney, and I understand Disney's concern in that regard. They certainly wanted to make sure the reporter was truly "invited" by you.

AS for the handicap room, while I agree you should have been told...if it was the only room available, the outcome would have been the same...and for many folks, it wouldn't have been an issue. We've been assigned handicap rooms from time to time, while it wouldn't have been my first choice, I understand the need for those rooms, and that they must be part of members inventory, so we may be placed in one occasionally if the resort is near capacity.

Thanks for the report! If you'e still there, have a "Sultry Seahorse" at Gurgling Suitcase for me!

I do totally understand the need for special needs rooms. We might have even stayed but not having the hot tub working is another matter. I also understood that it was the last 1 bdr and they didn't have a choice. I do think letting us know this in advance should be a common courtesy. As to the reporter, he contacted me through these boards and was very professional. I really felt I owed OKW a call as I didn't want to do anything that they didn't know about. My DH felt like Disney was trying to protect us, but at the same time trying to protect themselves by not having the media present. I am a fierce defender of all things Disney but do know they exert their power from time to time. We really could have cared less whether they took our picture or not, but just didn't want to be misrepresented as feeling threatened by the reporter. I asked my DH today if there was a lesson to be learned by all this, as we were on our way to the MK. I think for me I will stay out of interviews after this where Disney is concerned. My intent was certainly a positive one as we love DVC and sure hope the article represents that. I also felt bad for the reporter as he has been nothing but professional and very kind. I would guess it can be challenging working for the media in a town where Disney has such a huge presence.

Agreed, the jacuzzi should certainly have been in working order. And you should have been informed about it being a handicap room. I'm surprised previous occupants didn't report the tub not working, unless the felt they may be "charged" for the repair.

I too was contacted once by a Sentinel reporter through the DIS, but I was concerned that the reporter had contacted you through Disney, which certainly would have been inappropriate. As far as Disney controlling access, I'm sure the person that contacted you back from Disney received misinformation from the front desk...and perhaps the front desk person who told you NOT to talk to the reporter also did not really understand the situation. At least Disney is exercising good judgement for the sake of guest security. I do see that maybe offsite hotel venues are down 5%, but I doubt it is a downturn on overall tourism, more likely the result of Magical Express and folks staying on Disney Property.

I'm not sure it would be "challenging" to work for the media where Disney has a huge presence...the media would need to do what all media should do, and be sure what they report is accurate.

Believe it or not, not everyone uses the jacuzzi tub. I've never used it - at least so far and I have only stayed in a studio once out of more than 10 DVC stays. So if there are more like me out there, it's very possible that the tub hasn't been working for a while, LOL.
I will say that my young nephews love the jacuzzi and when they travel with us, the tub gets used frequently! They think it is theri own private swimming pool, I guess. :)

Best wishes -

I was reminded of one of the reasons we love our DVC so much and that is the diversity it offers. I love our hot tub but you are right Carol, it's not for everyone. Also the choices in rooms is one of the most attractive points of interest for us. We left the MK this afternoon because it was so hot. When we got back a huge storm came through. My DH and I sat out on our balcony through the entire storm. For so many, it is how many rides they can get in during the day. We absolutely loved sitting out watching that storm and feeding the ducks that dropped by. Maybe it's just that we are getting older!!! Or maybe it's because we know we are returning for 2 weeks beginning November 27th. Either way I know I am very fortunate to have have had these great memories and can look forward to many more.

The trip turned out good for you. That's good.

Disney will not support any media interviews that don't go through them. They have been burned too many times. Don't blame the CM for being paranoid. If they get themselves in the middle of an unauthorized media report, their jobs could be in jeopardy. That's why they acted the way they did.

I don't remember all the details, but I can also recall another reporter seeking interview subjects on this board about 1-2 years ago. If I remember correctly some people were outraged at how they were portrayed when the article came out. I think it was a reporter from the NY Times.

Anyway, don't worry about the grumpy CMs, your article will probably be just fine. Post a link here when it comes out.
