Hello...just a quick note about our father/son(12) trip to OKW.

Room location: We took what was available at 10:00am when we arrived. Because we were doing a studio and not worried about room or location, we didn't mind that we were on Miller's Road. However, I would not recommend it to light sleepers as the noise from Bonnet Creek Pkwy was evident at all hours.

Room decor/cleanliness: The building we were in has not gone through renovation so decor was older. However, our room was clean and everything in working order.

Resort appearance: Beautiful, clean and very relaxing. The lush vegetation was gorgeous.

Recreation: We played ping pong, basketball, tennis and shuffleboard. We also rented a sea raycer for a nice cruise down the canal to Port Orleans and back. We swam only at the themed pool and found an available chair at any time of day. We were very pleased with the amount of available recreation opportunities.

Dining/refreshments: The bar and counter service area was quaint. I liked how everything was accessible outside and just a short walk from the pool. We ate at Olivias for breakfast one morning and dinner one evening. The mahi mahi and new york strip were tasty. Our server John was excellent in knowledge and attitude.

Resort guests: It seemed many of the guests were grandparents with their children and young grandkids. This was a pleasant surprise because that is how we envision our DVC will be used in years ahead. Also, there was no rush about and everyone seemed so relaxed and friendly.

Resort magic: When we arrived and were walking to our room, another guest who spotted our check-in folder gave a hearty 'welcome home'. My son was very surprised that a guest would do that which made us both feel good. After dropping off our stuff in the room, we went to get lunch at the counter service (Goods-to-Go) and before having a chance to pay, a guest who had checked out that day paid for our lunch with leftover CS credits on his meal plan. Needless to say, we felt like the magic was definitely still at WDW. It also was a very good experience for my son to witness and we talked about the need to pay it forward in life - which he did later with a couple fastpasses we weren't going to use. :)

Overall, we had a great stay at OKW and though it being the most aged of the DVC resorts, it was in very nice condition.

The parks last week were fairly crowded - but we went to rope drops and got out as the crowds were rolling in - which allowed us to enjoy the resort.

Other than a fairly wet afternoon/evening one day, the weather was beautiful - not too hot and not too cool.

I would certainly recommend a stay at OKW...but for us we'd do the Hospitality House booking next time as we spent all of our resort time there.

:thumbsup2

Glad to hear you had a great time. Where along Miller Road did you stay, in what building? DH is a rather light sleeper and it would probably not be a good choice for us.

Building 22 which is at the end of the road. It's a nice secluded spot with a great golf course view.

Also, the Miller's Road bus stop is the last one before the Hospitality House stop for the park busses so catching a ride up there was very easy - though it was only a 7-10 minute walk for us.

I'm not really sure why, but your post actually brought tears to my eyes.

It seems like every time I visit WDW, by the end of my trip I am angry, lacking patience and swearing to not return for a LONG time. It has been almost exactly one year since our last trip, and we are hoping to return in Nov. for Food and Wine. Maybe it's because we are now taking our first child (not yet two) and I look forward to the opportunity to have teaching moments like that with her. Maybe it's hormones. I don't know, but thanks for this.

Sounds like the two of you had a wonderful time. We live for our family vacations, sometime it's all of us and sometimes, just my DS (11) and I. I treasure those special times, and WDW only makes them that more special. People often question my choice to buy into DVC and to me, it only facilitates the magic and the memories. Paying it forward is often more rewarding than receiving. Thanks for a great trip report!

Sounds like a great trip.

I'm headed to OKW this week for the 1st time and I can't wait:yay:

I will do my best to "spread" some magic with DDpixiedust:
Thanks for the report.:goodvibes

I'm so glad you had a great time, and I loved hearing about your magical moments. I am ashamed to say that we had snacks left over on our DDP last visit and it didn't even occur to me to pay for the people behind us until I read your post -- a mistake I will not repeat on our next trip!

It just proves that a little Disney Magic goes a long way! Thanks for sharing!

Glad to hear that you had a good time with your son! We are heading to OKW for the very first time this sunday and we are soooooo excited!!! :cool1: We will be staying in a 2-bedroom with dd9 & ds13 and we are new DVC owners (8/07) looking forward to having a kitchen, laundry & separate areas for the kids. Now if I can just get rid of this nasty head cold before we leave...

Great trip report and thanks for sharing!:thumbsup2

We will be at OKW for the first time this summer :yay: and can't wait to get there. We were just at HHIR and a lot of the resort activities were what we did most (horseshoes, shuffleboard, ping pong, pool, riding bikes, searching for hidden mickeys, swimming). Great for family time!:grouphug:

Thanks for the input on room location. I wondered about Miller Road, although I've heard some recommend certain buildings there. Which area of the resort would you recommend for most convenient use of busses to parks and back? I may see if we can get HH area since we take the occasional break from the parks and spend some time at the pool also.

I think (please correct if wrong) the schedules were...

Park bus route...

Peninsular Road
South Point
Turtle Pond
Millers Road
Hospitality House

Internal Resort/Downtown bus route...

Hospitality House
Millers Road
Turtle Pond
South Point
Peninsular Road
Hospitality House

I'm not sure one part of the resort is better over the others for busses....but I can say that we waited only once on an Epcot bus that seemed to take longer than usual - 20+ minutes - but it was a trainee driving so no big deal.

Otherwise, no issues - unless you want to count the time the driver missed the Turtle Pond stop.

:lmao:

good, concise post...thanks

heading to OKW in Oct

Thanks for the great trip report. Glad you had a wonderful trip. Can't wait to return to our home next January.:goodvibes

We just stayed at OKW in Feb and had a similiar experience. The resort is nice and relaxing, at times shows its age, but overall we really enjoyed it. We are going back in October and staying in a 2 Bedroom!

We were in building 22 as well, but dont really remember the highway being an issue. What did surprise us were the fireworks every night - they were much louder than I expected. Golf course view was great, I believe we were on the 6th hole?

I'm so glad to read you had such a nice time at OKW. We absolutely love it there -- so peaceful and friendly. We've stayed in the Miller's Rd. area too (building 21) and love the views. I especially like to watch the golfers and always laugh when I remember the time a man threw his club in the pond after missing a shot!!:rotfl:

LOL! I liked it when we were in buildings 15 and 64, because I got to heckle the golfers who plunked one in the drink on that hole! I usually got them to laugh about it.

Thank you for sharing. I really enjoy reading resort reports. I am glad your son was able to experience the altruism domino effect. It is something I discuss in my psych classes when we are studying pro-social behavior and how "one random act" can continue to repeat itself many times over. As my students say, may as well make that "random act" a good act.
