The countdown to becoming Old Key West lovers is on! I was just reading the unofficial guide and it said OKW is layed out like a bunch of little neighborhoods. Which would make a good request for first time visitors? Close to a bus would be nice or a really nice pool that's heated or an area with great views. What do you suggest OKW experts?

I generally just ask for "a water view." If I expect to have more than two in a 1BR (or more than four in a 2BR), I also ask for a building with a door from the laundry to the master bath---these are numbered 30 and higher.

okw has lots of water views.

you can ask for a golf view (most), water view or woods/garden view.

you can also ask to be near the HH (this is where the main pool is), a pool or bus stop.

I like South pointe (here the street address are the bus depot). now for a first timer this is probably too far from the action.

also like Miller road

We like Turtle Pond, it is quiet back there IMO. Also a pool is close to TP. Its OKW, you cant really go wrong no matter what:thumbsup2

Right. Almost everyone is close to one the pools. None of the buildings are super-far from a bus stop. Many prefer to be close to the Hospitality House, but that's a booking category not something you can request.

My "water view" request has landed me in Turtle Pond, Miller's Road, and along Peninsular. We liked all of them, but each for different reasons. (And yes, each time there was water in my line of sight....)

Ok...so does requesting a water view and close to a bus stop sound good? Or will one keep me from the other?

Not necessarily. Here is a very nice map courtesy of dianeschlicht to help you get your bearings in case this is your first visit ever to OKW:

I did that once and got building 40, our least favorite. Here's the "water view" we had-

And one time, we requested a golf view. When we checked in, thye front desk told us that unfortunately they didn't have any more golf views available so we had a garden view. When we got there, we had the nicest view of the golf course I've had. For our upcoming trip to OKW, I've only requested top floor and let them surprise us with view.

Like others have said, you can't go wrong anywhere on the property.

However, I have preferred near the HH when my girls were babies and as they were teens. It was a quick walk to the room from the main pool and Hanks as babies and when they were teens, they were given a little more freedom and could walk down to the pool before me!!

I kind of like those little spots. I was in 27 once, with a similar little pond out back. We had a first-floor unit, and spent an afternoon out on the porch with some drinks, watching the birds, turtles, etc.

Now I prefer HH now that I'm much older. Since my back surgery a few years ago I don't move quite as well as I used to and I refuse to be one of those folks using a wheel chair or electric cart. Plus the proximity to "The Gurgling Suitcase" . . .:thumbsup2

Are there any water views close to HH that aren't in that booking category?

The very light gray/blue is water. Miller's Road, right off of Peninsular, is reasonably close to HH without being in that booking category. It is the rear of the villas that face the water/golf course.

Remember that at OKW all the views are out what appears to be the back side of the building. The parking lot side has very few windows, so everything in the villas are oriented toward the golf course, woods and canal.

The very best buildings at OKW in my opinion, are 45 and 46. They are an easy quick walk to HH, and have the best water views of all right along the canal. The only slight down side there is that the bus stop is a little farther than some, but still not bad.

My second choice is Miller's Road. LOVE building 15, but if you aren't staying in a GV, the downside of that one is that you could be on the first floor UNDER the GV, and that can be noisy. The views from 16, 20 and 21 are pretty good too, and I have gotten some really good sunrise/sunset pictures there.

I would have to say our least favorite are buildings 28 and 29 across the canal from the main pool. The views are non-existent there, and 29 is very close to the busy main road where all the buses go. I'm also not fond of Turtle Pond. In my half dozen stays in that area, I have yet to have a good view or a good location.
