OKW Floor requests

My inlaws are thinking of joining us at OKW in June. A big concern is the issue that all but 3 OKW buildings don't have elevators and my mil is recoverning from a hip injury and stairs are a struggle for her.

Have any of you run into this before and were your requests for a first floor room met? This would be for a studio by the way.

Mil doesn't need a handciapped room, she just needs a first floor room or a building with an elevator. She'll be making her reservation thorugh CRO since it will be cash. But when I called CRO to inquire, they knew nothing.

Also, does anyone know how many buildings have three floors? She could probably handle a second floor room, but a third floor room is just out of the question.

I really want them to join us, they love the looks of the resort and that is definitley where dh and I will be staying. So another DVC is really not an option. They can always book something at a moderate or deluxe, but being at the same resort as us would be so much nicer.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Request "first floor or elevator due to medical reasons". You shouldn't have a problem.

I agree, have them requst a first floor room or elevator building because for medical reasons. Of course, by next June, hopefully her hip will have recovered enough that she can do stairs. My 84yo Mom has had 3 hip replacements on the same hip over the years, and does fine on first or second floor, 3rd floor is a little too much, though.

Depending upon how well she is doing in June, you may consider getting a wheelchair or ECV (scooter) for her. Don't let her hip get sore, it will make her miserable, and really ruin her trip. My mom uses a manual wheelchair in the parks.

Have a great trip.

Most of the studios are on floor 1 or 2. See Doc's building configuration summary:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=146435

The only buildings with 3rd floor studios are 14, 18, 35, 38, 64. All of the others have only 1st and 2nd floor studios.

I've requested first floor for a 1 bedroom just for preference and got it 3 of 4 times (one time 2nd).

OKW room controllers sometimes don't see - of course it might be my fault for not checking if this is my new stuff

asthma and arthritis - so believe me can't do the 3rd floor myself these days.

they had to find me another studio - they found several studios on the first floor. Of course she had to go talk to the manager.

told her the second floor would work too - guess looked really, really bad - my arthritis had decided to kick in and I was definitely having problems walking. So she only looked for first floor.

Thank you so much everyone. DebbieB, that link really helped. The odds of getting a third floor stuido are prety slim!

don't count on that - I have gotten the 3rd floor more than once.

so it might happen.

Uh oh Pat, that is worrisome. Did you have first floor on your reservation and they still put you there? They plan on using Disney specialist TA and noting on the reservation "first floor room needed due to mobility issue". Also, we check in a day before they do, so our plan is to talk with a manager to explain the situation.

We are also thinking they may just need to stay at POFQ. They'll be close to us, pay less and not have to worry about this issue. And we can always pool hop over to FQ to spend time with them there.

We also thought about SSR but I don't like their studios that much with four of us and they also prefer a room with two beds. I also really need the lower points at OKW.

Extended family trips are great but can be so complicated!

I would take a copy of their confirmation letter with you, and go to the front desk the morning of their check-in, explain to a manager that it is a medical need. They should be able to block out a first floor room for them, either in the same building, or a adjacent building, to where you are staying at OKW. It may be an HA room (even though they don't need one), it may not, but they should be able to block a first floor room that morning.

Chuck, thank you so much. That is an excellent idea, if they decide to join us, I will have them send me a copy of their confirmation letter and have that with me when we talk to the manager before their arrival.

Thanks so much for your help.:)

I've only stayed at OKW twice, in a studio and in a 1 bedroom (which really is remarkable!). Each time I requested "a first floor or an elevator building" and I did get my request both times.

Just request 1st floor for medical reasons and you should not have a problem. I cannot do steps since an illness 7 years ago and have never not had my request met since I had to start asking for it. I also ask them if we can be close to a bus stop for the same reason. Again, both requests have always been honored.

I think emphasizing that it is for medical reasons is what helps to ensure you get what you need. DH and I don't check in early, we rarely check-in before midnight, and it hasn't been a problem yet.
