OKW fishing question

I have a few quick questions about fishing at OKW. Member Services gave me a number to call for guided bass fishing, but I was wondering if there was anywhere my son and his 2 friends(all 3 are 12) could just put a pole into a canal or something and fish? We'll be there for 4 nights, and my husband thought he could take the boys for an hour or so and catch and release a few fish one afternoon, but I'm not aware of anywhere they can do this at OKW. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Great question, I'm not sure about that either, I do think you can do that at POR/FQ, so 'maybe'.

Hopefully someone's who's checked into this before will post!

Not sure about OKW but I doubt they allow unchartered fishing. We took our sons over to POFQ to fish at the FISHIN HOLE but they charge $6 per half hour (I think) to fish, even if you bring your own poles. They provide cane poles and bait in that fee. (no discount if you bring your own)

POFQ was a little too Disneyfied for DH and he wanted that fish bank experience for the boys first time, so we went over to FW. If you go to their marina and then walk along the beach past the tall grass (past the sand volleyball court), there is an area they allow unchartered fishing (catch n release). The campers frequent this area, and many of them have their own equipment.

We used a pack of hot dogs as bait and Dh taught the boys how to bait and cast. We tried to use lures but Disney fish know the difference and wouldnt go near it. Our joke, was that since it was catch and release, the fish were jumping on the hook for a free meal and a thrill ride! LOL! Or we could just throw the whole pack of hot dogs in the water at one time and go home. :rotfl:

Dh did all the releasing (I'll catch em but Im not touching em!) :rotfl:
They are not Bassmasters yet, but they caught sunfish and smaller.
We really had alot of fun and stayed out there for hours.

After fishing, we dined at Trails End Buffet which was pretty good. We would definitely fish there again as that was one of the highlights of our trip!

On many occasions, ever since the OKW units were being built along the canal, this 'ole fisherman has tossed a jig into the canal and brought in bass, bream, catfish and sunfish. They all go back, of course, just like we do with their big cousins when we're on the flats or in the rivers.

A small 1/8 -- 3/16 oz. jig with a short plastic worm bounced along the bottom will probably get their attention. On cloudy, windy days you may to to toss a topwater crankbait. The area behind the swimming pool around the OKW 50's buildings is a good place to get down to the water.

As to whether it's allowed or legal, I really don't know. My fishing was usually early in the day or late in the evening, while family members were getting ready for the day's or evening's activities. I can't imagine the powers that be preventing a Dad from letting his kid get a fish, however.

Remember the adage from an old Sarasota, FL fishing guide: "Take a kid fishin', because someday he may take you." It was true with me and my Dad, and it's worked with me and my son...so good luck, and good fishing!

We have seen many people fishing while on eh boat to and from DTD from OKW and early on when we had stayed at Dixie landings not sure if it allowed but many people do it. I plan to fish at SSR next year when we are there I also know that they fish at FW in the canal.

I too don't know the legality of it but have witnessed others and plan to give it a go myself. Catch and release of course.

Shhhh! But my husband often fishes in that area near the South Point pool. Every once in a while he gets chased off, but most of the time no one says anything. He is a catch and release man that just likes to fish. He has also fished at the far end of the Caribbean Beach resort and has caught fish there too. Good luck!

Thanks for all the wonderful replies! I don't fish myself, but I'm sure I will enjoy having the room to myself if the boys do! I was thinking the area around the South Point pool would be a good place to fish, I just wasn't sure if it was allowed. Thanks again!
