OKW direct purchase question

Total newbie questions, I’m sure. Couple of questions:
1) What is the lowest amount of points you can purchase direct from Disney for OKW and what is the current cost per point? I would contact them directly but don’t want to be called or bothered while I’m still in the early planning stages.
2) We currently are waiting to close on 160pts (resale) at Vero. Can we ask for the same use year?
Thanks! 🙂

I don’t know the answer to the okw minimum or price but yes you definitely want the same use year and Disney will give it to you with your direct purchase.

Just want to say DVC at this point at least is low pressure sale. They are there basically to take the money if you want to give it.

I would reach out simply to get a contact to purchase from (if you do).

Why are you wanting to buy OKW direct instead of just resale then? To get direct benefits it would require 125 points. I would honestly just buy resale unless you are shooting for direct benefits.

1) Add-ons for OKW start at 25 pt contracts. new member contracts for OKW start at 50 pts. To get a blue card, you would need to buy 125 pts direct.

2) For it to be an "add-on," it would have to be the same UY month. Otherwise, it would be like you owned 2 separate memberships and they would be more difficult to use together.

If you purchase the new contract as an add-on, you can easily pool points from both contracts at 7 months out.

Chalee94 thank you! So to get the full member benefits I’d have to purchase 125pts? I wonder what the purpose of buying direct from Disney would be for less than that then, if one doesn’t receive a blue card & the price is obviously so much higher than resale?

For my family, having to purchase that many points at non-resale prices to receive member benefits like dining, AP, & shopping discounts -which would be our only reason for buying direct- seems to negate the $ we’d save from the discounts.

Thank you to the people who replied! 😌

Thank you! Your reply helped clarify things for me. Resale it is! (When the time comes 😉 )

You're thinking only in your specific use case. The purpose of buying a small contract direct would be its original intended purpose: to add on more points to an existing membership, most of whom already have a blue card. Example: I'm planning a trip and want to buy another contract/additional points to be able to book a larger room.

Additionally, the process is quick and the add on points do not have usage restrictions and can be used at future resorts.

For my family, having to purchase that many points at non-resale prices to receive member benefits like dining, AP, & shopping discounts -which would be our only reason for buying direct- seems to negate the $ we’d save from the discounts.

You'll be surprised how many prospective DVC buyers on these boards get FOMO and plan on buying the minimum 125 after resale. In the last 5 years Disney has raised it from 0, to 25, to 75, to 100, and now 125. No matter what the number is, there will always be people willing to pay.

One reason some may want direct point less than the minimum which has nothing to do with the blue cards is that they want to be able to use them occasionally at RIV or any future resorts.

Direct points can be used everywhere but resale can not.

So, if someone thinks they want to be able to add a few nights, it might make sense. While 25 might not get you far. 50 points would and if used every other year, even more.

Correct. The reasons most people buy direct are not financial. As stated, if you are planning to own into the 2050s, there are expected benefits related to trading for other DVC resorts, but the AP discount is the main financial benefit offered (and that can disappear).

Direct OKW doesn't look like it is all that much more than resale, especially if you consider the extended contract and having a non-restricted contract, current years points and 7 month booking anywhere. I have already used my CCV to book 2 stays at the Riviera Standard view studio.Never stayed at OKW, but it looks like such a beautiful peaceful resort. Hope to try it someday.

If looking to buy a small contract say 25 points. On resale market there are not many and bring a premium sometimes $135+ per point. I think direct is $165 pp. so that is only a $750 difference. Resale will have higher closing costs than direct. When you buy direct they will match you current use year and if they have points available, current use year points. Resale can take a long time to find same use year small contracts. DVC has made some changes in the last year or two, making more current use year points available, when they buy a contract back, they can reassign the use year, before they had to keep the same use year. Direct you will have points in your account in a hour or two. Resale usually 90 days or so right now. Direct you can put it on Disney Visa card. No interest for 90 days. Resale you need to either pay or finance. Direct OKW is extended to 2057, about 72% of resale is 2042. Smaller contracts direct can make sense. Larger ones resale makes more financial sense. Good luck and Welcome Home. We have purchased 3 small direct for these reasons, 25, 75 and a 100 point contracts. The 100 pointer was for OKW, the other 2 at SSR.

The Jackal- thank you for your super informative reply! I didn’t realize closing costs were less buying direct, or that it was so quick. Good to know!
D-Trick- I suppose that’s true about FOMO!

When you buy direct, you have your points within hours. It’s not dependent on completing the process. The other piece is the entire purchase can be put on a Disney Visa and give you 6 months 0% interest so you can delay paying for it without any additional cost. They will also give you up to 90 days to bill the card to give even extra time! Even if you have the money to pay cash, it’s nice.Plus you get rewards which does offset some if not all closing costs!!!

Wait until your current purchase closes because you may qualify for a member discount on direct points. I saved an extra $5/point on my Riviera direct contract because I already was a member from buying my resale contract.

you can buy as little as 25 points if paying cash or 50 points if financing.

they Will match your use year.
