Can anybody give me some input as to whether we should request a certain building at OKW and if so, which one? We are a group of 7 and the 4 kids are planning to "live" at the pool with the slide as much as we parents will let them :). Also, we are either going to need to be on the first floor or in a building with an elevator as one of the kids is in a wheelchair. Thanks for your help...this is our first time staying at OKW!

Okay....1st, put your requests in order of importance -- 1st one as the most important as they give that one the most consideration from what I understand. I would just request...ground floor or elevator and state you have a child in a wheel chair, near Hospitality house (that's where the main pool with the slide will near).

Only building #63 I think it is..has an elevator so if you don't get that ground floor, this will limit your area a bit. If the elevator thing is more important (which I assume it may be) I'd list that first.

All the pools by the way are very nice and have hot tubs and playgounds, just the main pool will have the slide though.

Best of luck and have a wonderful trip!

Here's a (slightly out of date) map of OKW. http://www.dreamsunlimitedtravel.com/resortmaps/okwmap.jpg

The buildings with elevators are where it says "Commodore House" on that map, but as you can see they are close to the main building. I thought there were 2 or 3 buildings with elevators (all in that area) but scootch may be correct in saying there is only one.

Are you booking directly with Disney? If so, tell them you have a child with special needs and there is a team at the reservation center who can work with you on the room that best meets your needs. From what I hear, they also pre-assign you that room number so you are sure to get the facilities that you need.

I could be wrong...not positive. I do know though that it's bldng#63 ... if there's more than 1, maybe it's #63 & #64? They defiently are all in the same section though...and that there aren't many of them.

Okay, I must be an idiot. I looked at the map link and couldn't find any buildings in the 60's. It looks like the 20's are the closest?

The map is outdated. Bldg 62 is where it says Commodore House. And Bldg 63 and 64 are across the street from that in the empty space next to bldg 15. All three of them have elevators.

The closests bldgs to the Main Pool are 11-14 (12 is smoking FYI) 62, 63, 64 and 23-26. Make sure that they know that the ground floor/elevator request is for medical reasons as they will not guarantee it otherwise. The thing with 23-26 is that you can not just cut over to the pool, so they may look closer, but in fact are not. You would have to walk the light blue path up and around as there is a water way between those bldgs and the pool.

Thank you! I thought I was nuts for not being able to figure out where everybody was talking about!

Are you staying with points (your own or renting points from a DVC member)?
If yes, then Member Services takes care of any special needs, like needing a first floor or elevator room for medical reasons.
If you are making a cash reservation thru Disney, then you can ask for Special Reservations.

I would request ground floor floor or in a building with an elevator for medical reasons (it is important that they list it as medical reasons). That would be your first request. The second would be close to HH.

They DO block out and preassign the requests for the rooms that are wheelchair accessible (like the rooms with roll in showers). The "medical reasons" (like for first floor, but not a handicapped room) requests are not guaranteed, but you are pretty much always going to get a request for first floor or elevator. If you ask for a specific building or only list the elevator buildings, you are not likley to get what you ask for.
There are elevators in buildings 62, 63 and 64. I would not specifically request those buildings though because they are in high demand (they fit if someone asks for an elevator, close to a pool, close to a bus stop, close to HH).

Here's a link the DIS site information page about OKW. The resort is very nice and eassy to get around with someone who is using a wheelchair. The pool at HH has been recently renovated with a slide added. The pool at Old Turtle Pond is more than a quiet pool. It doesn't have a slide, but does have a hot tub and snack bar.
Here's a link to the OKW map from the DIS site. buildings 23 -26 are not as far from the pool as they look. True, you have to walk along Peninsular Road (there is a sidewalk); you can't just cut across because of the water. But, you are closer to the back side of HH, which is where the pool is. The tan line on the map that goes between the pool and HH is a walkway. It connects up to the sidewalk by Peninsular Road so you can go directly to the pool area from there from buildings 23-26 instead of having to go to the front of HH. (This might not make sense now, but it will when you are there).
