I've reserved a room for someone who will be traveling with their daughter who has cerebral palsey. Although they were mainly concerned with having to drag a wheelchair up and down the stairs, I was able to reserve a HA 1BR at OKW. Did I do the right thing? I'm wondering if modifications are necessary to someone with cerebral palsey. Will they still have the nice bathtub? I guess what I'm asking is - does any one know the exact HA modifications in a 1 br at OKW. Would they be able to switch to a non HA first floor or elevator on arrival?

They WILL have the nice bathtub, but they will also have a roll-in shower instead of the step-in one. I believe the bed might be a different hight as well, but that wont likely help the daughter unless they have her sleeping in the big king bed and they take the pull out.

The needs of a person with CP varies by the type and severety of the CP. Some are unable to walk on their own, and some are very functional.

As Diane said, the king bed will be lower to the floor so someone on a wheelcair can transfer easier, the shower will be a roll-in and, depending on the specific unit. the countertops & stove may be lower and there may be no storage space under the sinks to allow someone in a wheelchair better access to the sink.

They will still have the full sized whirlpool tub. By reserving the h/c unit, you also guarantee them first first floor or elevator buildings.

The toilet is also higher in the HA units. I would ask them if they prefer a HA unit and let them decide what works best for their family.

You can also refer the family to Special Needs so they can go over exactly what their room needs are and what Disney has blocked for them. The number is (407) 939-7807. They'll need the reservation number. Special Needs can take it from there and answer any questions about the specific accommodations.

As someone who has special needs of her own, I prefer to handle the arrangements. Only I know what I actually need. It's too easy for those without needs to misunderstand or make wrong assumptions.
