I'm holding in my hand the latest prototype version of the PinPics for PalmOS software, which allows certain hardware owners to view pin PICTURES as well as information on their handheld devices.

The pictures are full color for devices which support color.

Check this out:

The picture database is huge (32mb) and therefore can only be stored on devices capable of that amount of storage. I'm not aware of any Palm units with that much RAM, but we currently support HandSpring devices with a MemPlug module for holding a SmartMedia or Compact Flash card.

My adorable DW will be bringing the prototype unit to the pin event at WDW next week. Isn't this fun? :bounce:

All of this is, of course, free. Too bad the devices aren't.

Oh, and there will be some good news soon for owners of PocketPC devices. I don't want to say any more at this point and spoil the fun, but someone stepped forward to tackle this challenge and I'll let him tell it if he reads this board.

Any chance we can selectively download those pics to our Palms?

Not at this time. Right now it is set up for the entire database. Plus what he did was dump the whole thing on my computer then do that. The Palm Database does not support trades and wants and such yet and that is not on his current list of updates that he is planning. Plus right now even if someone else wants the database for their palm they would have to send us the media and we would have to do the download. Maybe in the future that is something we can do but it will be awhile.

That sounds great! I already have the Handspring, just need to get the Memplug module. Can't wait to see the prototype at the pin event!

Responding to Eeyore's Pal -- Figgy's right. However, I did keep in mind that we will eventually want to be able to allow selective picture downloads, and the software supports it. The main issue will be how to package up the selected pictures and send them to someone without blowing pinpics' bandwidth out of the water. If 200 Palm owners suddenly decided to download a few megabytes each, I'd get a nasty letter from our provider.

Then there's the issue of how to get updates without having to download the whole shebang again.

Suggestions are welcome.
