Not YOU, fellow DISers, but one of my three kitties! We recently adopted two Persian brothers to go with our original female kitty. So far, they get along fine. But someone is pooping outside of the litter box. I suspect my female (she's a bit picky and I don't think she likes sharing). My DH suspects the youngest boy (he's a bit of a handful). I just want it to stop. Would adding a second litter box lessen the pooping problem?

add a second box. Also be very diligent about scooping. If the cat's box is not clean enough for their tastes one of our cats will go beside the box. :headache: I think its the gray one but I haven't been able to prove it yet. I try to scoop twice a day now.

I'm guessing your female is "upset" about the disruption of the two new kitties AND having to share her box.

Get another box and put it somewhere away from her box.

everywhere I have read said one litter box per cat and 1 extra.. I have 2 cats and we have 2 boxes side by side....1 with a cover, one without because my male is too big for one with a cover and my female wont use one without!

I just got a kitten in August and also have 2 older cats. The big girls box is in the basement and my dear sweet little Minnie's :cutie: box is upstairs at the top of the stairs, and it seems to be working fine.

Our rule of thumb is one litter box per cat/kitten and one extra. We tell that to everyone that adopts from our rescue group.

Yes, you need another box for sure.

My sister has 4 cats and 2 boxes however she scoops her litter morning and night and keeps it poop free as best she can.

My two cats share their box nicely but it sounds like you need another one.

you can't have only 1 box for 3 cats. You need at least one more and possibly 2 more, it is just one of the things you have to accept and think about before adding more animals to a house. Be lucky it is only poop one of them will start peeing outside the box soon with that many cats and only 1 box, and believe me it is nothing to clean up poop but cat pee is a whole different story. Run now and set up another box!

Along with everyone else you need more boxes.
We have 3 cats, 5 boxes. We scoop daily - no more issues

We have an extra large box, so I wanted to see how it would go before adding another - my aunt had four cats, all adopted at different times, and they used one box just fine. Buying a second extra large box tonight!

I'm betting it's my girl - she is mommy's little finicky princess. :lovestruc

My parents have 2 cats, and every once in awhile one of them goes rogue and poops outside the box. They always have 3 boxes set up, just to make sure they're always close to one.

I have a rogue pooper...but I think it is because she does not like the litter..I recently made the switch to World Best Cat Litter..I would say 2mo ago...I have 3 boxes for 4 cats. She is a big girl, and she pees in it OK..its the pooping that is the issue.

Dh suggested I fill one box with regular litter...Ugh, I hate clay litter.

Our 3 kitties (now down to 2 :sad1:) all shared a box with no problems, too.

But some cats are more particular than others.

We had a "rogue pooper", too- added a 4th box (in a 3 cat household), uncovered one of the covered ones, and made sure we were vigilant with everyday scooping. No more poop where it shouldn't be.

Love the "rogue pooper" term, btw!! :rotfl:

My cats have always been less tolerant of their boxes in the summer or when stressed. Now that I just have my one 17 year old boy I try to keep him happy so i change all his litter and give him a new box every 3 days or so. I have 2 gigantic boxes because when I had 2 cats each had their own. Now having the 2 makes clean-up sooo much easier because I can just swap them out. My cat does tend to miss a lot so I have kept their boxes in our 3rd bathroom tub for many years, again it makes clean-up much easier.

I'm not sure what I'd do if I went from a single person girl bathroom to sharing with two boys, but rogue pooping might be my initial method of complaint.
