So here she is...my new Canon 100mm F2.8L macro lens. I loved my buddies 105mm sigma macro so I knew I was gonna have to get a macro sooner or later. When Canon announced this I knew it was the one I wanted. I love IS as a feature to help out in certain situations and boy does it work on this lens. This has Canon's new "Hybrid IS" which compensates for two types of camera shake. I find it works as advertised. For macro work I can get 1-2 stops of compensation. For standard telephoto shooting....around 4 stops. Literally I can shoot this at its equivalent 160mm and get sharp pictures at 1/20th a second. Amazing! This is my only telephoto lens(my other lens is the Canon 17-55mm F2.8) so it will be serving double duty for some time.
Now I don't claim to be some macro guru. I am practicing up and let me tell you, if you haven't done macro at 100mm or greater before, it's a challenge. You don't realize how small DOF can be. For those who haven't let me put it this way, if you shoot at 1:1 magnification at F2.8 your total DOF is somewhere around 1/8th an inch! Take into account your camera moving back and forward slightly and you realize why some photographers only do macro on a tripod!
Anyway, here are some of my shots with this lens so far. Have a look and feel free to critique! Like I said I've only used a macro like this a couple days so it's a work in progress.
